I'm now the proud owner of seven rather spoilt piggies who are currently on waitrose veg all week and eat lots. Having just found out that I'm expecting for the second time after been told I was infertile after the first I need to know how I can reduce their food bills but give them a good standard of living? Anyone have any ideas? What wild food can they eat over the winter?mallethead We're not talking broke or unable to keep them but I do have to buy all of the baby stuff again!

I've replied to your pm but will reply on here too so others can see!

My veg bill is huge too.

In winter I buy horse carrots, a big sack is £2 and they last ages.
My neighbours save their veg peelings/ off cuts for me
My dad has an allotment so I often get freebies of seasonal veg e.g cucumber, beans, whatever he has excess of. He also did a trough of pick and come again lettuce for me, you just pick the leaves and they grow back!

I also grow some stuff in patio pots but not much as I tend to kill plants.

Try a local farm shop rather than Waitrose! :) Lidl also have good cheap veg on offer and most supermarkets reduce stuff at the end of the day. I go into Morrisons after work and buy whatever is cheapest!

Congratulations!

Congratulations on the pregnancy! Hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months!

I would switch to Aldi for your veg- they often have cucumbers, lettuce etc for 29p and lots of other veg for 49p, it's always really nice and fresh too we buy it for ourselves not just the guinea's.

Also, you can grow herbs in your kitchen window sill, they're very easy to look after from what I can gather. I've only had my piggies for a couple of weeks so I plan on buying a herb plant a week untill I have a selection. I brought basil last week and it says on the label "only water when it starts to wilt" Thats my kinda plant as I'm useless with them!

Hope everything goes well for you .x

my neighbours have been giving me there left over veg just started so if you are friendly yours may as well .

CONGRATULATIONS! One baby when you've been told you're infertile is a miracle but two! That's a gift, I bet you're over the moon!

You should find it easy to cut costs if you've been shopping in Waitrose. Everyone elses advice is dead right, Aldi and Lidl both have fab offers on on their veg. I got lots of veg from there are 29p. Farms can be good too - I got red peppers for 14p each from there, couldn't believe the price! And keep a watch at other supermarkets, check online for the offers. Asda had full corn on the cob with leaves for 9p the other day. It really makes a difference.

I hadn't thought of family and neighbours but may do now.

BTW what are horse carrots and where do you get them?

Horse carrots you will probably have to go to agricultural feed places or tack shops to by and they are normally something like 10kg depending on where you go, will last you ages! they are not the prettiest carrots in the world but my mum has fed them to us on occasion and they taste fine! I now buy most of the veg for me and my partner at lidl as well as the guineas and it is yummy!

Congratulations.

I try to work out when they reduce the veggies in the supermarket, and time my shopping around it. If not the less expensive Supermarkets are ok, I find Morrisons better in the winter, because they source all or most of their seasonal veggies from their own farms, so they have less overheads in getting it to the store, plus Morrisons' veggies seem to last a lot longer.

Best Wishes

If you have a Millbry Hill nearby thats where we get our horse carrots from, its basically just an enormous sack of carrots :P but really cheap

Well Teresa came to visit me today and bought a BIG bag of veg from Aldi for my lot and I can't believe the prices - 29p for celery, 29p for a pair of little gems, 29p for a cucumber - unbelievable! Much much cheaper than Morrisons / Tescos and really good quality - my pigs have had a feast tonight - thanks Teresa! Will definitely try to find where my nearest Aldi is!

PS - I get my horse carrots from Crossways at Ellingham on the Bungay road, rosielx

I was in my element today, My mam came visiting from York and we popped to ASDA... Well we passed the reduction shelves and there was half the veg section in there and my mother bought looooaaaads of it ha ha, she loves my piglets though she calls them her grandpiggies and spoils them, so they are currently tucking into their sugar snap peas, carrots and broccoli from their grandma lol :)

Congratulations!

As has already been said switch your veg shopping to Lidl/Aldi - they are both fantastic for offers. I got a celery today for 29p from Aldi - you can't do much better than that.

Congratulations!

Have you ever thought of buying your baby goods second hand?
That would also save you a little fortune.
I'm sure you can get good quality baby items from garage sales and free cyle adds etc. Just have a look. That will help with the piggy budget as well....:))

We've got an Aldi just up the road from where I live and another one just slightly out of the city centre on a retail park, but I've never been - I think I need to get down there!

A friend of mine tells me to go there for our own shopping (before the piggies came along) as she gets all her fruit and veg from there and never has a problem with it.

I buy my veg at Tesco and look straight away at the discount counter. Some items are reduced 90%.

Also, my local market on Mondays is usually half the price of Tescos but the produce is not so long lasting.
