I've read just about all of the guides on here, and I know you should check their stuff every once in a while. How do I do this without them freaking out? I can't flip them over because they panic, and I don't know how else I would go about it.

I use the same position that I use to control an uncooperative piggy with one hand when you need the other hand for medicating. Over time your boys will become used to the ritual and you will become more confident.

Here is me with my Pili Pala from the medicating thread. Instead of taking a picture like me with your free hand, you can use your stronger hand for the check. Expressing a penis takes a bit of practice, but it can be done. Don't beat yourself up if the first few times don't quite go to plan; you will get there (the same goes with medicating, too).

Use lots of praise, encouragement and commiseration with your voice (guinea pigs react to the emotion in it).
You can also use my piggy whispering tips to tell your boys that you love them first, but that they need to behave by asserting your authority; they will then behave better. Do this before and after to make sure that they know that you love them!

Alternatively you can control your boy between your thighs and have both hands free. you need to find out by trial and error what works best for you.

There's different ways depending on the guinea pig and how comfortable they are with you and your handling. At first, you do have to be a bit confident and more careful if they aren't used to it but that also becomes easier. My method when I was new with one was to put a towel down on our counter or even a small lap table I use on my couch if they are a bit more comfortable or I need to see from an upper angle as well. Holding down gently but firmly on the upper area, I usually lift up from the back a bit slowly but keeping my other hand under the stomach. Generally this works for the ones putting up some panic resistance. The others, I do exactly as @Wiebke is showing so well in the photo. Once they've become used to it after the first couple times, this is comfy for both of us.
