Last night, Midnight, who is 6 years old, went through the trauma of us having to cut open an abscess under her neck that was continually growing by the day. She couldn't eat well and was not drinking well. We do not have the money for a vet at this time. We squeezed this oh my god rank smelling puss out until no more would come out. I read to use a saline solution to clean it out but i need to know what kind of ointment to use on her. She is really weak today but ate a little and drank like she was dying of thirst. Should i be laying her on a soft cloth?

I know this isn't what you need to hear but if she is weak you NEED a vet, borrow money if you can.

If there's no one to borrow you money then saline would be the best, which is just cooled boiled water with salt (I can't remember proportions but they should be online) and keep a close eye on her, I hope someone else will be along to give some more accurate advice.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Please do not use any ointments on Midnight.

The best home made saline solution is 1 pint of cooled boiled water mixed with 1 teaspoon of salt. Gently bathe the area using cotton wool or a cotton bud.

But I really do think she needs to see a vet. She may also benefit from a course of antibiotics which only a vet can prescribe.

You will need to keep the wound open and flush it daily in order to allow it to heal from the inside out. Another reason I strongly advise you see a vet as if you haven't done it before, they can show you how to do it safely.

If the wound is allowed to heal over, there is a chance the abscess will return.
