i have a small number of regular foster carers that work with me fostering guinea pigs until they are ready for rehoming. most of my foster carers are happy to provide food, bedding, hay, fresh veg out of their own pocket as they know it helps the rescue. however i have one foster carer who insists i provide food, bedding, hay.

could other rescues let me know how their fostering system works and who provides what. ?/

thank you

My regular fosterers provide the feed/bedding themselves - like yours do, because it helps the rescue and as they all have their own pigs anyway it's no big deal to them.

I provide the caging if they don't have a foster cage of their own, change over feed for a few days and of course I cover any vet fees though so far none have needed to take their fosters to the vet - I foster out the lifelong residents as they are fit and healthy.

Several of my fosterers have joined the FFC (failed foster club) as they fall for every pig they look after, the fosterers find it easier to hand back the lifers as they know they will see them at the rescue next time they visit.

I foster for BARC...

I didnt ask them if they could provode food, hay etc I just assumed I would pay myself as part of helping the rescue.
Sometimes if Angie (BARC rehoming co-ordinator) has had a bag of food donated and she'll ask me if I want to take it.

The only thing I dont pay for is vet bills. If I take a piggy up to their vet it is put on BARC's bill.

I would presume, if i went down that route, that the 'ettiquette' would be to provide bedding and food yourself cos that's kinda the point, you're doing them a favour?

My piggy foster carer is my sister so I guess its different for me, she provides everything but the cages and vet bills.

if we did fostering, we would happliy pay for food and hay, didnt occur to me it would be any other way!

thanks to all of you that have replied, i do provide cages where necessary and always pay for any vet costs but just woundered if it was standard practice for foster carers to provide the rest.

thank you

I foster for Crawley GPR. The fosterers all provide food and bedding. Jenny covers any other costs, such as vets.

I just assumed that if a fosterer would pay for the bedding and food etc. Not sure how you can get round that but they shouldnt be expecting you to pay for it.

I have a form for fosterers to fill out that says they are happy to provide food, bedding and love, rescue to cover other costs and both parties to sign.

Have had an exception recently where I wanted to get 2 bunnies out of a situation, I'm full so found a rescue but they cant take them for 2 weeks, I have given fosterer hay, dried food and some veggies as at the moment she is not in a situation to pay the extra. This is a short term foster and fairly exceptional.
