Our Doris is on a 0.8 baytril dose after a saga of a respiratory problem...

Over the last couple of days we've really struggled getting it into her...! We've tried:

(a) syringing it into her mouth. She doesn't like it! As for 0.8ml, can she actually drink that much in one go? When we first tried this method I think about half of it ended up all over her face.. :0

(b) mixing it with blackcurrant/ribena. Marginally better I think, but she still does everything to try to avoid it..

(c) mixing it with her treats. At the moment we're breaking it up into a morning & evening dose of 0.4ml, mixing in a tiny bit of ribena and syringing small fractions of that into cucumber, melon, parsley, anything we can find that she normally likes. It was OK to start with, but it's getting more difficult and she doesn't eat it... Could she possibly be fed up of all the treats..!? Or can she smell the drug? ")

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? @)

unfortunately you just have to syringe it into her mouth mixing with her food makes it hard to get the dosage right especially if they share a bowl, Ozzie is a biter with baytril and won't take it so you just have to hold him still and get a second person. Try messaging 'flinstsones' she has a pig that always being syringe fed she'll know lots of tips :)

Syringing medicen is always safest, Try wrapping him in a towel, have him sat on your lap facing away from you, lift him up against your chest with your hand under his front paws and just do it as quickly as possible (this is easier if you have a small dose of a strong solution)

Thanks, I guess we can have another go at syringing again using the towel, though it's been hard work getting the little wriggler to keep still.. pow-pow

Just to mention that when I said we've been putting it on her food, we've been hand feeding her to make sure she takes it, not just leaving the food in the cage.

The problem with the split dose is the mornings, when we're usually rushing about getting ready for work, it's frustrating waiting for a fussy piggy to finish her breakfast..! Maybe we just need bite the bullet and do the lot in the evening..

Baytril tastes awful. We used have to battle to get it into ours piggies. We use a 2 person technique and a table top if any are on baytril.

I will hold piggie tightly on a table top (this stops them getting any grip on the table with claws to scramble away) rach then syringes medicine to them, using one had to hold theirs head and pop the syringe in from the side of mouth wit hthe other. This technique as always worked for us... Always syringe medicine slowly especially a big ammount like 0.8ml

We pretty much use the same method as Sport Billy and we have found that they struggle more the better they are feeling.

It's reassuring to know that other owners have the same problems..!

...Ok, so if we attempt to do the 0.8ml in one 'sitting', how much should we try to administer to Doris in each 'squirt'? Does 0.2ml sound about right?

Not sure whether to continue using a drop of Ribena in the solution or just dispense with it altogether, as it adds to the volume... :red

If the ribena doesnt help her take it i really wouldnt bother, but it might be worth making the syringe smell of something tasty, like twisting it in the watery bit of a cucumber for instance :) My methods are not fool proof, but every piggy is different so trying a few different things to find what works for you is usually best I find :)

We have had baytril a few times and the only method is, quick! Get them sat upright and squirted into the side of the mouth before the piggy knows whats going on! Grip the piggy firmly, I know it feels like you're hurting them but you wont, it just takes practice inbreeding

Ok, doing a full 0.8 dosage was hard work, but I think we're getting better and it seems easier in 2 * 0.4 doses with 2 people administering it..! I've just read about the towel wrapping method so maybe we'll try to perfect that next.

One thing that was odd, when we tried adding Ribena (only 0.1ml to the 0.4ml bayril) the baytril solution in the syringe seemed to turn a light, pale blue colour, sort of a cyan. Should it do that? It's 'no sugar' Ribena. I'm not sure what colour baytril is but I thought it was fairly clear. ?/
