Very unhappy or sick pigs might just sit in a corner, not eat or look fluffed up. A scared pig might hide away and not come out while you are around. After a few days settling in time with a new pig you can try to pick him/her up. They will probably run away but you can encourage them into a box or cuddle pocket and pick them up in that. The more you cuddle them the easier they will become to pick up.
I was really worried about this too, my piggies still always run away but I've found if they are really scared they just don't move, so if they run it means they aren't 'that' scared. I left it a week so they were settled but i spent a lot of time just sitting in the room and talking to them. I also tried holding food out so they would come and sniff my hand and know who i was
Also when they are happy they make more noise, and i've also found when I pick them up if they are comfortable they start rechewing what was in their mouths or they'll start eating (they like to always have some cucumber!). 8)
