How do you weigh your pigs?

If they will be still I put them in a bowl on the kitchen scales. If they are very wriggly I have the option of doing it on the wiifit lol

lol @ wiifit! Sadly I don't have one of those but you have just reminded me, we have some old kitchen scales that we don't use! Thanks!

I put a big metal bowl lined with kitchen paper on our digital kitchen scales. The sides are quite high so they seem to feel quite safe in there and don't try and jump out!

Is it important to weigh them regularly?

I've never weighed mine.

lol Lindsay he doesn't look as if he likes that! :(|) Just enlarged the picture, the smaller one looks funnier though looks like hes pulling a face, once enlarged I realised he wasn't lol!

I find it hard to get an acurate reading of my Montgomery. He is such a good natured piggie and rumbles constantly, even when in the scales. A vibrating piggie does not make for easy weighing. It is so funny to see, this little piggy rumbling away in the weighing bowl..

I used to use the kitchen scales when Mildred used to fit in them rolleyes

Mildred is over 1300 grams now and definately wouldn't fit her backside in them anymore :(|)

I bought a weighing scale from wilkensons for £4 about 2 weeks ago,its big enough for my boys as it weighs item up to 5kg. It also came with a dish so they sit in that. In aldi or lidl I seen a digital scales for either £7 or £7.99 this week they were due in with the christmas bakery stuff.

I have similar kitchen scales Becky. Kitchen towel so piggy feet don't slip. Then I convert 1bs & oz into grams on my phone. x

I have the Salter aquatronic scales which are a flat digital kitchen scale. You just use your own bowls etc to weigh on them. I use an old plastic mixing bowl. Put the bowl on, zero the reading, pop piggy in. I line the bowl with kitchen roll so that its not too slippy and the digital scales take such a quick reading they don't have to be in there too long.

Never thought of using the Wiifit!

And now I ordered some scales from ebay rolleyes I'm so weak

How much should a healthy piggy weigh, anyways?

I love the pics!
Is there ever a time where a Piggy doesn't look cute?!

@MommaPiggy

The reason you should weigh your pig at least weekly (more if they are ill to daily) is so you can detect the subtle changes in body weight of a sickly guinea pig. A guinea pig which isn't feeling well will reduce the amount of food it's eating and drop weight. It's normal for a pigs weight to fluxuate, say, rising and dropping by 50g but what you're looking for is a steady - and sometimes dramatic - drop. If a pig drops 100g, say, then most owners go on the alert. If the pig drops more than 100g it's considered an emergency (the pig is not eating anything).

The weight range for guinea pigs is larger than that quoted in books, I've found.

My boars currently weight:
1.4kg
1.3kg
1.25kg
1.25kg

however I've heard of some people with boars who borderline on the 1kg weight range and are healthy - haven't continued to lose weight. I've also heard of some people with sows who are somewhat beefier than my boars. It doesn't mean my boars weight is wrong, and when she realised it she had her girlie pigs checked to ensure they weren't overweight (one was). Some pigs just are their weight.

I'm gonna have to do some research, find out how much my boys should weigh and then start taking an interest in their weight.

Thanks guys x.x
I had no idea it was so important.
My new scales should be here soon xx>>>
