A silly question perhaps! I know it is possible to get just a prescription from the vets rather than the medication too...but what happens then?
On this occasion, I'm actually wanting to buy flea treatment for my cat but I can see I may like to do this in future for the piggies (for example for metacam, which the vet seems to prescribe in tiny 3ml bottles which are hugely expensive!).
If I get a prescription for the flea treatment from the vet, does it have to be for a given quantity? I would like to bulk buy 6-12 months of flea treatment for two cats - if I get a prescription for the medication itself (in this case Prinovox), is there a limit on how much I can buy, or does the prescription have to be for that set amount? My vet charges £12 for just a prescription, but I am not sure if this is per item or per prescription.
Many thanks for your help! And if anyone can recommend a good online pet pharmacy they have used that would be great :)

I should imagine it will be £12 per prescription. You need to look at individual companies for their procedure. I found one where I was able to send the prescription by email to speed up the process but it still took 3 or 4 days for the medication to arrive. This was fine where I was changing meds for ringworm and doing this was due to save me around £50 but for pain relief like metcam I would imagine the saving would be so small that it wouldn't be worth leaving my piggy to suffer in pain for days to complete it

I would only do it if your pet is on long term medication and it means you can make a substantial saving by buying online, with a veterinary prescription. My rabbit is permanently on frusol and I have now got a veterinary prescription, so I can order from Vet UK. I have made sure that he still has plenty of medication available, in case I have to wait a few days for my order to be dispatched.

I can thoroughly recommend Vet UK. VetUK Selling Pet Meds and Pet Products to Pet Owners.

Thanks both, that's helpful. Yes, I am mainly thinking here for my cats' flea medication which is significantly cheaper online and that I will need every month for many years hopefully! I have found that the treatments you can buy over the counter e.g. frontline/ bob martin etc. aren't very effective but unfortunately the good one, Prinovox, is only available with a prescription.
Unfortunately I have had a couple of bad experiences recently with vet/s and it has probably clouded my judgement a little - having spent an awful lot of money on some medications for the piggies that I later found to be unnecessary or the incorrect doses I am reluctant to spend additional money there if I can find an alternative in the future! Fortunately my current piggies don't have any health issues at this time, but I'm just thinking ahead. many thanks :)
