Piggy-Mad

:0:...Am i taking on too big of a task? I just dont like to see the little chap all alone in his cage. I'm going to go buy him a bigger cage tomorrow because his is a tad small so I would probably be wise to wait until I have a partner for him before putting him in the new cage wouldnt I? so its neutral

He is 10/12w old

Oooh I dont know, seems a big scary task

HI!

Not at all - i bonded a baby pig with my 5 month old boar and all went smoothly!

its usually best to have a yonng baby piggie - have them meet on neutral ground, ie the living room floor, kitchen floor, bath and leave them to it!

Some people take them away from eachother after a while, and then try again later, or the next day - i dont recommend you do this - i think its best to keep them together at all times.

Make sure the cage is cclean from all smells from your piggie you have now. i had a new cage too and they both went in their new cage together so it was also netural.

give them two of everything, ie water bottle, bowls, veg, litter trays, beds etc etc you get the idea! stops the chance of them fighting over it!

Thanks moonie, I'm just worried that they wont get on and i will be left with 2 seperate piggies!

you can always take your piggie to a rescue centre/ RSPCA and they will let you pkace your piggie with others to see how they get on.

He is so young i cant see such a problem with what age you get. If you are unsure, do as suggested above, the rescues can be so helpful!

where bouts are you if you dont mind my asking?

If your piggy is 10/12 weeks old, you have a couple of options.

You could try to bond him with another young piggy of a similar age, or an another adult boar. I think my choice would be to try an older boar from a rescue ... I am sure there are plenty of lonely boars looking for a friend out there. He will already have got over the puberty thing and hopefully be a role model to the younger one.

I am afraid at the end of the day it does depend on personalities. Some members have had success with two younger boars being bonded but from my experience my most successful bonding of males has been an older boar with a young boar ... infact father and son. My biggest failure has been litter brothers, who fought badly when puberty hit. I separated them, neutered them and they both live really happily with two sows each.

Have a look at your local RSPCA or rescue centres and see if you can try bonding your little boar with his friend before bringing the new piggy home.

Let us know how you get on.

PS. Yes, neutral territory is a major factor so wait before getting your new cage or hutch.

I'm in exeter. I'm going to try the local rspca tomorrow. I do recall seeing a poster somewhere wanting homes for an unexpected litter (petshop female no doubt!) so if I go for a baby I may go visit them

I think it's absolutely worth trying to bond him - with the advice given. He's only young and stands a good chance of finding a friend for life
