can he go in with the girls?
at the beginning of the year my big coronet boar Meteor had 'the snip' so he could live with my tribe of resident girlies (the ones who willl never be rehomed as I'm too attached!)we were told to wait 5-6 weeks until after the op to put him in which we did.
well yesterday i had the shock of my life to find 3 babies in the run. the only male to ever be near these girlies is Meteor! i now worried the other girlies could be lovedup to, have had a look and think another one could be, but then shes always been a large girl?

could i have put him in too soon? and he's had a last fling? i thought 5-6 weeks after op was the 'norm'? its the only explination i can think of, these girls have been with me since last haloween, so i know they werent pregnant when they came in. i feel terrible ive let this happen (they are all older girls too so could have had big problems!)

Wow, what a surprise! Bet they are all gorgeous though :)) My understanding is 5-6 weeks also and that is what we did with our boar, having said that I do not think he has managed to have his wicked way yet and that was over 4 months ago!

I do not know how long the gestation/pregnancy period is for ginny's, did he get in with them at all before the castration?

WOuld love to see photos of the babies if you have time :)

not unless he squirted through chicken wire(!) (which i used to seperate the run so he could see and hear the girls but not get at them...
will toddle off for some photos shortly :)
would it be safe to put 'mum and babies' with the other 'mum' and her babies? I'm running a little low on cage/hutches, but dont want to leave her and babies in the run...
I'm a little concerened though that 'mum' is not the mum, they look nothiing like her! but theres no one else it could be?

Wow, what a shock for you! I'm no pro on this area so couldn't answer your question, that needs someone with experience of doing so. :)

Personally I wouldn't go a day less than 6 weeks post-neuter for pairing with a sow, but reading this I'm inclined to lean towards 7 weeks when I get King neutered to pair up with Saffron. Got me all worried now. :))

I'm extremely worried..theres another 6 girls in that enclosure...imagine if they were all pregnant? i think i would break down and cry....

I don't know what to say first....

Congratulations on having 3 new baby piggies. :) Can you check mum is mum by seeing if she has milk maybe?

Sending you a huge hug for the shock.

Advice on the forum always seems to be 6 weeks to be absolutely sure. Fingers crossed he just had one golden shot in him.

Don't panic... yet.

4-6 weeks is usual, there has been a study about latent sperm production that seems to indicate most aren't fertile even sooner than that though.

You should be able to tell who mum is - her pelvic bones will be separated after the birth, she may have a little blood on her bottom or face where she has given birth and cleaned them, and in the first 12 hours she will start to produce milk, so you should be able to identify her. If they're in a big group I'd separate her (once you're sure she's the mum) and babies into their own place so that they can bond. Also, one sow going into labour can spark off the others, even if they're not ready.

If they were all in with him at the same time they will be roughly due the same time (up to 2 weeks apart, as they are in season every 16 days or so), so you should be able to feel babies inside them in that case.

Hope all is ok

Oh what a surprise, you have to post pics of the babies though! Hopefully the others aren't all pregnant too, but I'd say they mightn't be, since maybe he was fertile for just a little while after going in with them, but only one girl was on heat?

How long has he been in with them? Guinea pig pregnancy is 65-72 days. I think there could be a possibility he could mate with them through the wire . . . I've heard of dogs doing it, but not guinea pigs :)

Congrats on the babies anyway, even though they were unexpected

well ive moved mum into that cavie80 i was 'given' last week. i felt it a bit cruel to put her and babs in with the other mum as they dont know each other at all (they've never met so could fight?)
pics just uploading
