I read that seasons usually last a day or two, but I think Cocoa has been in season for a few days now. At least I believe she's in season -- whenever she sees Penny through the divider she purrs madly and wiggles her butt. Any advice?

Hi!

If Cocoa is an adult sow, you may want to have her checked for ovarian cysts.
Sow Behaviour (including ovarian cysts)

One of my girls has recently been diagnosed with ovarian cysts and I've gotta book her in for a spay after I get bk from a week's break in march. One if my other girls is also in season a lot so I've got to get her checked too.

Oh gosh, ovarian cysts sound really scary :( I will definitely call the vet tomorrow and see what she says

Don’t panic! They are getting much better at diagnosing and treating these as more people take their piggies to vets then say, 10 years ago. With young and good surgical candidates they can spray the piggies and for less surgical candidates they can even offer hormone treatments now (injections or implant). So IF it is cysts that doesn’t mean it’s the worst! Don’t be scared, trip to the vet with an open mind and then you’ll be better informed. Hugs

Ovarian cysts are nothing to panic about - if that's what it is.
Jemimah had successful surgery to be spayed after she developed ovarian cysts.
So long as you have enough pain meds and critical care for syringe feeding after the op she should be absolutely fine.
If Cocoa does have cysts and is going into surgery feel free to have a dedicated thread and we will support you through it.

I’m worried about the possibility of surgery because when I got Nickel neutered last year he passed away from post-op problems. The thoughts of surgery give me awful flashbacks, so I’m hoping it’s not cysts. I’m not even sure if my vet has spayed a guinea pig before. But I will stay positive, thank you for the support everyone :)
I’m calling the vet this morning so I will give updates after that

I hope everything works out okay and please don't worry, many guinea pigs have been survivors of ovarian cysts!

The vet called me back. She didn't mention anything about ovarian cysts. She thinks it may be more of a dominance thing and that I should switch Penny and Cocoa around in their divided cage to change things up. I've also been doing some research on ovarian cysts in guinea pigs and Cocoa has no other symptoms except the longer season. I will definitely call the vet again if Cocoa keeps acting like she's in season, though

My Ginny was once in season for 4 weeks! It was a noisy nightmare. The vets couldn't find any cysts and she calmed down eventually. She still has 3-4 day seasons though.
Her sister Luna is the opposite, you wouldn't know when she was in season yet the vet found an ovarian cyst after she seemed in pain. 2 weeks of metacam and she's been fine ever since.
Like humans, I guess their cycles are all completely different.
Weirdly Ginny seems to come into season when I do (If you get what I mean). Anyone else experience this or is it pure coincidence?

Thank you for sharing your piggies' experiences. It feels more relieving to know that sows can have a longer season without having cysts :)
