Hi! I have had my 2 rescue piggy babies for a week now and they still don't seem to ever come out of their fleece cosy. Is this normal? They are about 6 weeks old and brothers. I have left veggies etc at the entrance to tempt them out and they have been snaffled up at some point. I take them out each evening for a few minutes but they are very very nervous. When can I expect them to be confident and exploring their hutch and come out when they see or hear me? Worried I'm doing something wrong

Hi and welcome!

Your two little babies miss the presence of their adult mum and their piggy family to guide them very much, so they feel very insecure and exposed in any new territory. They have most likely not had anything in the way of friendly human contact. Place a blanket over the cage to make them feel more secure and to encourage exploration. Please be patient and persist.

You will find our new owners' How To guides very helpful; we have put them all together in a starter kit. There is a whole section that just deals with lots of tips for settling in guinea pigs and making friends with them.

It takes a while! I'm sure you're doing nothing wrong x

What might be worth trying, if you haven't tried already, is popping a towel or blanket over the end of the cage so they feel a bit less exposed. You never know when a golden eagle might swoop down from the ceiling and eat you...

My two new girls are always in hidies or in the hay. It just takes time time time and more time and bucket loads of patience.

I take mine out for lap time each day too. Both together.

Best of luck. Hope they start to venture out soon.
