Hey guys, I've noticed some people have a big herd of guinea pigs, I'd love that many! I'm just wondering, when did you get your first one and how long did it take to end up with a herd!

I had two guinea pigs for 7 years, and after one died I got two more young girls to be the lone one's friends. Then the other old one died, but one of the new ones was pregnant! (from before I got her). She had one boy, and I couldn't bear to give him away, so I kept him and got him another boy to be his friend, and then I got another boy from the ISPCA. So now I have 5, not a herd, but I'm getting there. But getting the new guinea pigs also made me think I wanted new rabbits too (and my parents agreed since I was taking good care of the pigs) so I got Evie and Leon, and now have Lily and Lila too. So since Christmas, I've gotten 9 new smallies! (And I want a couple more girl guinea pigs too . . . )

At least I do know where to stop if it gets out of hand! I think . . .

You think? :)).

I don't have a herd, I have 4 piggies just... but no more room at the end. I did start with 1 and I wasn't getting anymore after that but he needed a friend, so I got 2 girls, then I felt one of the girls was being left out, so got another boy, leaving me at the grand total of 4. I've been keeping piggies 8 months. Maybe I'll have another 4 in 8 months :)).

Hmm, had one boy, had 3 girls, got 3more boys and 3 more girls , started fostering, then rescuing, now have um lots? My main herd is Paddy neutered boar with up to 10 ladies, if I could have all my piggies live like that I'd be happy. Lovely to watch them all interact

What counts as a herd? I had four pigs together within 2 years of owning guineas. There was a time when four piggies was my limit....

I dunno what counts as a herd, 4 or 5 I guess? :)

I'd love to have a big herd one day too, with a neutered boar and loads of girls. :) One day when I can buy them a shed to sleep in and a massive run :D

I think I'll get two more girls, and have four girls, that'll be nice.

I've had a succession of two piggies for nearly five years from 2004 until spring last year when the situation finally changed for me to have more.

You could say that I have have been catching up with a vengeance over the last year!

The only remaining part of the old couple is Llewelyn; I have been able to build my herd of eight sows around my neutered boar.

I was gonna have two, ended up with three and adopted a fourth within three months. The fourth one died after 5 weeks though and I'm only just feeling ready to have a number 5 (which will be four, but my fifth).

My problem is that I need to travel with them at least every second month so 4 is really my limit. When I move back to my home town and don't have to travel so much I am hoping to have 5 or 6 girls and a neutered boar in a large open pen.

It took me a year to get to 12. So averaging one a month I guess.

Wouldn't have it any other way!

Biggest herd is 7, 6 girls and a neutered boar.

I was thinking that's a lot to get in a year, and then remembered I got 5 and 4 rabbits in 5 months! I didn't think it was that bad until I counted them all :)

I know though that if you really love them, you just want more and more :)

And with guinea pigs it's handy, because you can get a group and it's easier and cheap than say, if you ended up with 12 dogs! :D

Well for almost 3 years we just had 2. Then we sadly lost one so got a pair of sows at the end of March to keep our remaining piggie company but fell in love with a neutered boar and sow pair so went back to the rescue two weeks later to rehome them. The first attempt at bonding didn't go well but the second attempt was fine and now we have all 5 happily living together and would never just have 2 again!

out of curiosity...where do you all keep your big groups? Any excuse for piccies rolleyes

well last july i had 2 i now have a group of 6 5 girls and a neutered boar they all live happily together in my spare bedroom :) would love loads more but its just not possible with the room i have short of giving up the living room lol. but i wouldnt be without any of them

I bought two then one had babies making it 5. Sadly we lost the male to epilepsy then a fox ate through the outdoor cage and we lost the babies. Then I got into real bother because I contacted Hels and it all spiraled from there!

Now within a year we have a herd of 10 living in a custom built shed, a boar inside waiting for a friend a pregnant lady and a foster girl.

This is our shed

We are going to improve it this year by insulating it, heating it and adding another level so they have a huge amount of space to play in. Then they can be out there all year.

I just have the two. I want more...So much more!
I love the idea of having a whole bunch together, interacting and having fun but I still live at home and my dad still tells me what to do.

Being his house and all...I can't really argue.
One day, I hope to have as many as I can possibly care for. I just love the little animals so much.

Seeing everyone here and all these people with so many...Makes me so jealous~ :))

AAaaaaarrrgghh! I have to stop reading these posts!!

It's making me guinea pig broody! Only 1 at the moment, waiting till he's 'safe' after his op! But already wanting to sqeeze a few more in! Think I need therapy or some kind of intervention! Ha ha!

Oh don't tell me. I postponed my adoption til next month but will be waiting a bit longer as my much awaited ratty babies are being conceived as I type :<> and I will need some time to settle them in before adding to the family again. Goodness me, but I want the piggies too x)

I've had my herd from Day One. I got them 2.5 weeks ago. I adopted 7 but due to his medical reasons, Merlin went to back to the rescue so I now have 6. X
