How Long Can A Guinea Pig Hold A Wee For?

Mabel has been squeaking when weeing. In early January she had a stone removed but since then , despite antibiotics, pain relief and Vetpro she continues to squeak.
Yesterday she spent the day at the vets where she had X-rays and scans which showed nothing.

They have asked me to get a urine sample from her today and drop it in. So she’s been in a box on an upturned puppy pad for 2 and a half hours so far. I’m still sat watching and waiting. I daren’t leave in case she does it and I miss it and she contaminates it.

Which brings me to ask. How long can a guinea pig hold their wee for? 2 and a half hours and counting....

The longest I have previously waited is an hour - with Mabel again.
Holly takes about 10 minutes in the box - it’s like she knows what I want.
Poppy can take her time - average is about 45 minutes

Mabel is so stubborn. I haven’t heard a squeak from her since 7am. Time to up the fluids, I think!

I believe in the case of certain piggies (I am looking at you lovely Maple) that they can hold their wee for 2 seconds longer than you can hold yours.
Then as soon as you can't wait another second and race off to the toilet, they will do a huge pee, trample all through it, and have it fully contaminated by the time you return from your emergency bathroom trip

Get the cucumber out! That is a long time for a guinea pig to hold in a wee.

She finally gave in after 3 hours 5 minutes and did a monstrously large wee. Which I have dutifully sucked up with pipette and now deposited at the vets. Little madam! She was hopping and wiggling from foot to foot at the end.

Sounds like Mabel has a mind of her own and was deliberately making your life difficult.

She’s a very feisty piggy so she will have been furious at being manhandled yesterday and then “interference” again this morning. She’s looking very grumpy now but the cage clean beckons so I’m going to have to annoy her again!
