How Long Did It Take You To Name Your Piggies?

PS as to opera names: Would you like Falstaff for your dominant boy and perhaps Fidelio for the black one (I know that it is actually a woman, but it may suit him?)

Most of my piggies I named the moment I saw them. The most difficult two to name were Nellie and Elma - took me the whole drive home to name them

Thanks @Wiebke I DID think Falstaff 'Staffy' at first, but then I thought, especially with his gingerness and the fact that he likes food...then I thought is it cruel to call an animal after a fat, lecherous, drunken knight? However hilarious and cool Falstaff may be? (One of my favourite opera characters)Then I thought, how about Sir John? THEN, he developed his penchant for hair, and I thought, ok, he's got everything Rossini's Figaro has personality-wise AND he loves hair, (not that he's into dentistry, matchmaking, pharmaceuticals, veterinary services etc, and as far as I know he can't play guitar)... SO Figaro (although Mozart's Figaro is a pretty dull guy IMO)

Fidelio is great, I've tried it out all day but I don't think it suits the black one.

Originally, my operatic pairs were:

  • Figaro and Lindoro (but as Lindoro is our early Count, the black one's too sweet, tried Viva as in Almaviva, but it doesn't suit)
  • Guillelmo and Ferrando of Cosi Fan Tutte, with the understanding that Dorabella and Fiordiligi may come to the herd later if I ever had to neuter these for any medical reason.
  • Papageno (Pip) and Tamino of the Magic Flute, but their personalities don't match
  • D'ory and Isolier, but I was never sure of them.

On another note, the name J.D. really interested me as a homage to my favourite mezzo, Joyce DiDonato, and with reference to Juan Diego Florez, but I'm not sure that really suits either.

I LOVE Peter Mattei but there's no way I can get him in. Although all three are in my absolute favourite Barber where he plays Figaro, so maybe in that respect I could...

I also was maybe thinking 'Tesoro' ''treasure'' for the black one

Not quite easy if you have a theme... I think the names are lovely and they are certainly unique to the forum! Not quite an easy feat considering the number of members' piggies present and past! :)

Thanks... update: apparently the Latin 'Lindor' means 'he who seduces' SO 'Lindoro' is going to be a variation of that. The black one is certainly loving, but seductive may be a bit far LOL

Have you thought about Bottom in a Midsummer Night's Dream for your black sweetie boy? I am sure there is an operatic version of it somewhere!

As soon as I knew I was getting a guinea pig, I thought Boris sounded like a fine name for a boar!

If my adoptees don't have names or will need new names ( because we already have/had pets with their rescue name) then I usually think of names in advance or on the day we adopt them.
Rocket really did rocket about like a missile hence his name.
Rosie and Poppy were originally Holly and Fudge but our great dane was named Holly and I thought Rosie was far too pretty to be called Fudge hence their new names.
Poppy gets called Pops sometimes too and Rosie is Rosie-Roo and Mrs Whskers ( because she has SO many whiskers and really does look like a Beatrice Potter character).
Livvy-Lou is a derivation of her rescue name Olivia.
Eddie Boo Boo ( as I mostly call him) was named Edward by the RSPCA ( I sometimes call him Edwardo as well).
Hettie - well, as soon as I thought we might be adopting a ginger sow I immediately started thinking of names, it was going to be Jemima or Henrietta and the minute we saw her we knew she was Henrietta.
As for the 3 babies, they were born Wednesday and then Thursday I woke up with the names just there in my brain - Cuthbert ( Bertie), Georgina ( already being called Georgie) and Harriet. ♥
