Hi. I have an almost 5 months male guinea pig & recently i bought a new one, male as well but he’s around 2 month old. When i introduced these 2, they seem fine & friendly. But apparently the elder one is trying to mate with the younger. I know it is the dominance thing but how long will this keep on? Because I’m worried if the little fella would get worn out or anything because he’s so small compared to the elder one :(

Hi!

Please provide a little refuge for the younger boy that your adult cannot get into, but be aware that babies of that age are so agile and fast that they cannot get humped unless they are willing or cornered. To avoid the second, please only use hideys that are opern or have at least two exits on opposing sides. Babies normally don't get hurt!

The post-bonding dominance phase lasts on average for about 2 weeks.

Please take the time to read our bonding and behaviour guide. It takes you through all bonding stages with typical behaviours (including the dominance phase) and has got dedicated chapters and boar and baby bonding, with videos. You should find it both helpful and interesting!

Please read @Wiebke ’s post and the guides she has linked you to. They help explain things very well.
