how long dose a indoor Guinea pig live for ?! I know they say 4-7 years but what have your experiences been ?

I had one live for.nearly 9 years and one die unexpectedly at 2. I dont know what the average is though.....

Anything between 4 and 7 is about average for both indoor and outdoor piggies. We recently visited Hutches rescue near us and one of Joanne's piggies is 10 years old and still going strong so we think it just depends on the piggie.

Lisa & Ali...x

It varies Astrid. We have lost piggies between ages of 3-5.5 years so far. Just depends on the piggie, often it is things totally uncontrollable like illness, exactly like humans.

My first two piggies, one lived till 7 where as her friend died a few years before at the age of 5 but she got a unexpected tumor...

4-7 years seems to be the current average at the moment. One of my childhood piggies lived to nearly 10 years old and I helped to transport a 9 year old with her 6 year old "play boy" husboar in an emergency to their new home a few years ago, but to be honest with the indiscriminate mass breeding that is the norm these days, anything over 4 years is a boon!

I've lost two young piggies to acute heart failure before and just after their second birthday. Medical problems/severe illness can happen at any age, though.

There is a 17 year old piggy in Australia that is still going.

As my last lot were outdoors and all males And only lived 3 years x

My old piggie when I was a kid lived until he was at least eight.

My two who have passed, sadly passed roughly 2-3 years of age. I feel like I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks I hope not. Two are roughly that age now so I'm watching them like a hawk as I don't want to lose more.

Same I have such I strong bond with mine I can't imagen life without them :( x

The average is 4 - 7 years but I had two piggies before that passed away unexpectedly at the age if 2

About 20 years ago, had two golden satins ( brothers ) bought from a private breeder. ( Sorry that was in the 'bad old days' when no one knew about rescues. Not sure if there were any then?) One died at 4 years and the other one died two months later. A friend of mine has 2 outdoor piggies who are 5yrs.

I think it depends on the pigs themselves. I've had one indoor sow live to about 8 and a half. Another died at just about 2. I think it just depends on the piggies themselves, their general health and whatever they are predisposed to.

Wow! Worlds oldest looks like Romano!

I hope he lives to that age!

Feeling a bit sad. Just lost one (two days ago). She was only four. Her mum is still fine and their boar friend.

@flowerfairy I am really sorry to hear that. I am sure that it was nothing that you did. I had two pink eyed white piggies from bramcote rescue, they died around 2 years both of them I was really upset as my other piggies had lived to more like 7 -9 years. It seems really variable.

Thank you. Its hard when they go so long isnt it? Well, its hard any age.

My previous 3 pigs all lived till five and a half. My current 3 are 2 and a half, 3 and 4. ;)

All my pigs have been indoor ones. My first two rescues, my first sow died at 5 while her other sow mate recently was PTSed at 8 1/2, so really it varies I guess x

Ive not had much luck. My 4 rainbow pigs all lasted til about 5, but no longer. I think the breeding must have something to do with it although 3 of the four were rescues so you never know if their past has also had an effect.
