Just wondering how long it will take my newbies to learn their names? My older 2 know theirs for sure. I've tested it by calling their names and they look at me, I have even tried tricking them incase it was the tone of my voice and saying the wrong name to them whilst looking at them (no reaction). Not sure whether they think their name is their name or just something good coming lol! Mine all have what I term affectionately "Cupboard Love" they are so funny I can only ever stroke them in the cage if they think they may be getting food, if they don't think its on the cards they just run off lol!

I would think it's fairly unusual for guinea pigs to know their name, but I hope I'm not doing the species a great disservice by saying that. Out of our four, I would say that Ivy knows her name, but then she is highly intelligent (proud mum!). I don't think the others do at all, although they definitely know our voices, and what certain tones of voice mean. (Food, usually!)

Cupboard love, yes that sounds very familiar!

I thought they all did all of mine seem to. (Except the new ones). Mrs Mouse definitely does as I always call to her and she looks at me, She is the one I tested and said Lacey whilst looking at her and she didn't turn to look at me, I repeated Mrs Mouse and she looked again. Lacey I think does to because if she is being naughty (like sometimes she hogs all the water bottles so the others can't get in) I shout Lacey Louise and she looks and me and runs off (not of the others seem to bat an eyelid when I shout her name).

Anyone else have an opinion about whether they tend to know their names?

Of mine, I think that Aztec (on the right in my avatar) knew her name but she was a very special and unusual pig. I dont think the others did. They do know the sound of the fridge door opening though ;)

Many of mine know who is meant when I say their name, but I also have had some who would neither listen to their old or new name... :)

One of my childhood piggies set up a big wail not long after his wifepig had passed away and we happened mention her name in his presence. So some piggies certainly know not just their own but also their companion's name! ;)

This has got me really interested, I am going to have to do some more testing, my new ones for sure will not know yet but I will experiment over next few months lol!

My pigs don't know their names - they react more to pigs or Girlies...
I think Maple knows her name and maybe Pecan, but the other 3 are ignorant hahaha!

I either say their names too much or they are just clever, I'm sure all my rainbow bridge pigs knew their names lol

Morris looks at me when I say his name, but not when hubby says it, Boris knows his name but doesnt react... mine are 4 months old only noticed it this week

He's one of those piggies :)
