My guinea pig was outside and when I took him in I noticed a mushroom in the grass that looked as though he had bitten it and maybe eaten a chunk. Naturally I instantly got very worried and have been sat with him for the last couple of hours, he was alright but now is a little sleepy but I'm not sure if that's very out of the ordinary after being outside. I'm really worried about him. Any advice?

I've have just been looking online and a possible reaction to a toxic mushroom is becoming sleepy. The recommendation for humans to to seek medical attention and take any remaining mushroom for testing. So if you think you guinea pig has eaten some I would take them to the vet to be safe, don't forget to take a sample of the mushroom along as well.

Thank you, I'll see if I can't take him tomorrow

I would pick up that mushroom... then you have two options: hope the piggie did not eat it or run to a vet clinic with the mushroom and the piggie...
Tomorrow is too late if the mushroom is toxic. Going to the vet tomorrow means that you are choosing the option 1 and hoping that the mushroom is not toxic and everything is going on well.
Are you really sure the piggie ate the mushroom?

There was tooth marks in it but I pulled it up in such a hurry I didn't see if he had just bit it and not eaten it . But guinea pigs don't tend to spit things out do they?

Went out just now and he popcorning and moving around , his eyes seem bright but is there still a chance that all the symptoms will come on still ?

Was laying down when I checked again just now and seemed quite relaxed and then started popcorning and went straight for the nuggets I oi in , does this seem positive? Or is the fact he seems very chill bad?

If you take him to the vets with the mushroom, they may tell you nothing is wrong, or they may save him from toxins.
If you do not take him to the vets, he might be fine, or the toxins might kill him.

It could be nothing or it could be very serious - do you want to risk not taking him immediately?

I can't take him because the vets is shut , would it absolutely be too late tomorrow? What can I do tonight to help?
Am I right in thinking that things pass through them in 4 - 6 hours?

after so many hours there are huge possibilities that he did not eat that mushroom or the mushroom was not lethal or highly toxic. I have read a story of a poor piggie who ate a very little piece of a toxic leaf and after 1-2 hours he started being ill and the vet couldn't do anything.
There are luckily only very few lethal and higly toxic mushrooms (Amanita Falloide for example) which damage the liver and nothing can be done; then there are a lot of mushrooms which can cause troubles, but not the death. I don't think that little mushroom was lethal... Try to make a research online, try to look for the name of the mushroom, so that you can relax...:)
My father was a mychologist, I have never learnt to know mushrooms, but I remember when he used to show me the very few species which send a human to the heaven... they were not the little ones we find on a lawn...

with us humans sometimes doctors use medicines which make us vomit the toxic food, but piggies don't have the reflex of vomit...

if you send me the pic of the mushroom I can try to search it in my father's books... although there are thousands mushrooms, maybe I have the luck to find it...

I couldn't take him to the vets , but he is alright and eating and moving around , thank you all for all your help ❤️
