ches had 10 days of metcam 0.3ml twice a day after his dental but has dropped weight and is struggling again since stopping the course on saturday night.

i just rang the vets to ask about extending the course until we go there tomorrow or thursday but our vet isn't in but the other exotics vet is so i'm waiting to hear from her.

because ches is interested in food and is able to eat most of his food i wondered if it might not be his teeth that are bad again, but his mouth maybe feeling a bit tender and the metacam might help with that. then obviously when he's checked over we can see if it is his teeth again.

he was keeping stable until saturday then he dropped 25g sunday and another 20g monday aswell.

to be honest he shouldnt need metacam this long only 2 days i would say, has he been on daktarin at all?
as its poss he has an ulcer due to the spores pushing in the tongue and cheeks.
also he is due another dental any-day now as they need them every 2wks for a few mths before going longer between periods.

if he is having a GA then you need to find a rodentologist near by or if you can get him to us this week i am going to see a rodentologist Saturday who is going to train me to do dental, I'm more than happy bring him down with me?

love claire x

his back teeth were 1-2mm too long and he has changes to the tooth roots which have bent his teeth slightly and caused gaps between them. two of the gaps were 'significant' and full of infection. so i think that's why the metacam and antibiotic was for ten days as it was for pain relief and an anti-inflammatory.

thanks for the offer to take him to the vets with you but we are seeing our vet probably tomorrow, maybe thursday so we'll see if the teeth have already grown back again or whether there is something else going on like an ulcer etc. i'll mention the daktarin aswell.

i don't know if i'm expecting too much too soon but he was eating ok until the meds stopped. he's eating most food now but he is struggling at times. :(

he had a very light sedation for his dental. i'm not sure if he would have to have one again incase the gaps need cleaning out again.

he's wanting particular foods more so i've been letting him and hand feeding them as he finds that easier.

xx

we got an appointment with our vet for thursday morning.

ches is basically able to eat everything but hay. he does have bits if i break them into small pieces. he's been having lots of grass instead. he can eat dried herbs in small pieces but squints when eating larger pieces.

veg wise he ate that fine but a bit slower than maisie so i hand feed him more after they finish what's on their plate.

he's also had some fresh dandelions aswell.

so overall he is doing well but not quite right. i'll update thursday after the vets. :)

Sending healing vibes to Ches, hope the vets goes well.

Which Metacam have you been giving? The cat one or the dog one? If it's the dog one, it seems rather a large dose.

Archie and Kevin have sometimes needed Metacam following dental work, and have taken it for up to a couple of weeks. Kevin had some ulceration to his cheek due to the way the teeth had overgrown and the Metacam really helped. Archie takes it on and off depending on how he is coping with his dental issues.

it's the dog metacam.

i wondered about ulcers and maybe some irritation in his mouth because he can eat, and he really wants to eat aswell, he's excited about his veg and grass, dandelions etc.. but when he eats hay he squints. and he doesn't want pellets at all.

i think he may be adjusting from stopping the metacam and engemycin as he was keeping stable before the dental and after. the day before the course of meds finished he was 1171g, then the day after 1146g, then 1126g, then today he is 1136g. it's not a massive drop in weight and the vet did mention he could drop weight from the stress and adjusting, before he gets used to everything again and then his weight should pick back up.

i don't know if i'm worrying too soon and he is just adjusting to hay eating again. that is the toughest thing he will eat and everything else he's managing ok. but then i don't want the teeth to be bad again or him to have ulcers and i don't take him back to the vet.

he seems happy enough. it's just eating hay really that he squints and looks a bit uncomfortable. but i let him eat as much as he can by himself and then i hand feed extra bits afterwards.

he's actually having more veg aswell now and there must be something wrong if he isn't gaining much more with extra veg. i'd say he's having another plate of veg a day spread out through the day.

i hope i'm not getting too ahead and expecting too much and then stressing them out with another journey to the vets. better to be safe than sorry though isn't it.

whereabouts is this?

and conscious dentals - is that for things like spurs? or do they do everything, like cleaning out infected teeth etc? i don't really know about conscious dentals and i don't know how ches would be having work done whilst awake.

i'm not actually sure if my vets do conscious dentals. i'll have to ask.

:)
