I live in a flat with a tiny, pathetic excuse of a balcony (literally only big enough to step out onto, with your feet still touching the door and the balcony railing, and I only have size 4 feet!) and all the grassy areas nearby are kept really, really short by the council. I'm going to grow grass and possibly dandelions in planters on the balcony railing for when I get my guinea pigs, but I'm not sure there's enough space to grow a steady supply. If I go out to find some nice, long grass and pick some and store it in a box or something, how long will it be feedable for? There is an area sort of nearby that keeps their grass long, but it's not close enough to walk to every day. Maybe only once a week. How do I keep it fresh to make it feedable for longer?
Obviously my guinea pigs will have a constant supply of hay, but I'd like to regularly feed fresh grass too.

Hi, i have no grass in my garden since i moved home last year. My 3 girls had been used to grass every day until then, and were missing it. So like several other forum members i forage for grass 2 - 3 times a week. I bring it home, wash it, roll it in a towel to get excess water off. I put a folded hand towel in a carrier bag, put the grass in on top of the towel, and keep it in the fridge for up to 3 days. Hope this helps.

l pick grass and foraged greens,, a couple of times a week, picking a black binbag full, or mymobilty scooter trailer full . l store it in crates in a cool shed, its good for 4 days, by keeping it cool and lossely, it stops it cooking and turning into silage, you can put some out on newspaper to dry in the sun to turn into hay. my piggies like it eought way.

I would definitely pop it in the fridge but be wary of how long you keep it because grass can start to ferment quickly which is when you would get in to trouble with tummy problems. Perhaps you could pick a couple of times a week and make use of your home grown once a week too

I pick grass for the rabbits and guinea pigs every day. I have to lay it out on newspaper to dry off. It keeps for 3 days max. After that they lose interest in it.

I cut grass when the piggys can't go outside to pick their own. I wash it, dry it in a tea towel and keep it in old ice cream containers in the fridge with the lids on for up to 2 days. I find the piggys aren't interested in it after 2 days.
