My piggy Winona was recently spayed and a few days after the surgery lost her ability to walk. Initially her leg where she had had a catheter was swollen and the vet believed it to be infected. She was on antibiotics for 10 days and meloxidyl. After the 10 days was up she was continued another 10 days. Swelling was down some but still unable to bear much weight on the leg. She’s been on the second course about 5 more days and still barely using the leg. She’s still on meloxidyl and being supported with critical care but is eating and drinking on her own as well. She is the same weight today as she was a week ago. Does anyone have experience with something similar? How long do I let this go? I will be speaking with the vet again next week as she’s off this week. Thanks.

Please have her checked again. She should be walking pretty much as soon as the swelling has gone down. :(

To be honest, this sounds unusual!
Contact the vet ASAP, continuously.

Ok I will call the vets office to see if they can see her Monday when the vet is back. Poor piggy.

So Winona had her vet visit yesterday. She has picked up .02lbs so that’s good. Since she is improved but not cured the vet said just keep on keepin on with syringe feeding and meloxidyl. She said this type of issue orthopedic issue is very uncommon in guinea pigs but can happen and she just needs more time. Surprisingly last night she did take a few steps on her own in the cage!
