I seem to remember reading on here that a 3 week course is recommended for a *.T.I - my usual vet wasn't available ,but she did give Bumble a shot of Baytril and did agree to order in the Septrin - it looks like it might only last 5 or 7 days though - - Bumble has just squeeked now though and this is the 3rd day on anyibiotics (Wed Baytril shot, yesterday and today Septrin - should I be asking for more? there was bloos in the cage and blood in his we sample - she could not feel any sludge or a stone developing and said that therefore she has to treat for what she could see.

I don't know about the length of course for Septrin I'm afraid but I did just want to say I would think about asking for an x ray in this situation as stones can't always be felt as I'm sure you know. We had a guinea with stones last year & diagnosis was only made on x ray. Hopefully Bumble just has UTI & the Septrin will shift it, 5-7 days doesn't sound like a very long course though.

Hope Bumble will be feeling better soon :)

i think the course is usually 10-14 days for a uti, alongside metacam aswell. weigh daily aswell to make sure their isn't too much weight loss. my ches started on a course of septrin and metacam but lost alot of weight and there was more blood aswell so he had xrays and a bladder flush as it turned out he had sludge.

hopefully it is 'just' a mild uti, but i would probably ask for a longer course, then take things from there. :)

What dose septrin are they on? Normally a course can range from 7 days to 3 weeks for a stubborn UTI. As biscandmatt have said above it is a good idea for bladder issues to give metacam alongside - a) for pain relief, b) for anti inflammatory effect.
If Bumble is still squeaking crying I would speak to the vet for a longer course of septrin, get some metacam and discuss the possibility of getting an X-ray done to rule out stones should it continue after a longer course of antibiotics or should symptoms get any worse.

Lots of healing vibes to Bumble x

Is pig on any pain relief? If squeaking, he should be on pain relief. A urine sample analysis will tell you if its cystitis or an infection...antibiotics won't cure cystitis. If there's bacteria in the urine, bacteriology and sensitivity would be a good idea to identify which antibiotics the bacteria are sensitive to. Palpation isn't enough to confirm or deny the presence of stones, an X-ray, ultrasound or CT would be required to know for sure.

All as per Amanda's post. Re length of course, we have had Septrin for between 7 days and 4 weeks (for really stubborn infections) at a dose of up to 1ml twice daily. Stones are always a concern, particularly so in boys, so I always opt for a conscious x-ray sooner rather than later, if symptoms are not clearing.
