I am thinking of adding a boar to my herd of 7 sows, how many boars would be best 1 or 2?

thanks

Yep as Graham says just the one, it's like a herd of Lions there is one male and all the females!

Just who do men think they are? :D

Aww sounds a lovely idea and I hope your gorgeous girlies would accept a male, it is certainly something to think about!

Good luck!

yes, would definately just add the one male to your group. if they don't accept him you could always get another male to keep him company. if they do accept him, he will be one lucky boy with all those girls. good luck with it. hugs and cuddles coming your way. :smitten: :smitten: :) :)

I'm sure someone on here has 3 boars in with loads of girls, its in the 'george the ginger pig' thread! I personally would just go for the one! 2 of my girls wouldnt tollerate my boar, one has never been with him long enough to dislike him and the other lived with him when she was a baby and they still get along great today when she decides to sleep over in his cage and eat all his food ::) i think it depends on the personalities a lot! x

I've had 2 boys n 3 girls but the boys were best mates ::)
I would only put one in, you may get issues with the top sow that sometimes sort themselves out but other times I just swap my boars, I'm all for an easy life ::) Will you have a choice of boars?

I have three herds. Each herd has one neutered boar. I've tried putting two neutered boars in with each herd, but they always have a punch up. ;D So I strongly recommend putting one boar in with the ladies!

thanks guys would it be best to take the sows with me to choose the boar then get him done then he can join them when it is safe.?

You're best looking for one thats already done, loads of rescues castrate boars :) that way you can leave them together a while because sometimes you dont always know from the off wether it will work O0

thanks emma does anyone else agree i never thought of that was just going to find a boar from a rescue then get him done ?

Lots of rescues get the boars done. Check the rescue section on here, as there are usually pigs that need homes on there! Good luck! I have one boar living with 3 sows, and they are a very happy herd!

The january rescue of the month had a few neutered boars on, i think Nigel and Donald from hunnybunnys are neutered, not sure though! Theres George the ginger pig still looking :( i think he was neutered in the hope it would improve his chances but still not had any luck! Otherwise, try guinea pig rehome, there are loads of them on there! x

hope you find your male and that your females will accept him and all is happy with you and your babies. good luck and please keep us updated on them. hugs and cuddles to you and your babies. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

thanks i quite like nigel but dont know if he would be too timid, i have adopted from honnybunnies before in nov i got the cabury sisters vanilla, mocha, caramal

all my girls are under a year old

cheers

I ask people to bring me their sows and the boar chooses, often its just a case of which one is best but occasionaly you'll get an attacking sow ::) I just don't pursue things when that happens, my view is that in the wild one of them would retreat (and yes I know they're not 'wild' animals :) ) so in effect that what seperation is :) .

Good Luck with whatever you decide to do O0 I would just have 1 neutered boar 0:)

if your girls are happy the way they are, why add a boar? it is just a question, i can't see why adding a boar is so important to your herd. perhaps some one could explain this to me. what ever you decide to do good luck with it. hugs and cuddles to you and your babies. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I don't think anyone has said its important? ?

Goldilocks just wanted to :) There are a lot of boars in rescue over here and I think when people realise this they choose to add a boar to their girls to give one a home.

Boars can also be the balance between a group of unhappy squabbling sows and a happy group/herd.

Thats why i got mine :)

Two of my castrated boars were left on their own when their partners died as my girls had a big pen and I've got a good vet I decided to put them in the pens. Unfortunately they weren't left on their own at the same time or I think they'd have paired up ::)

thank you for answering my question which is all it was. as i am just use to having two girls. and i am interested in learning about this magical critters. but perhaps i shouldn't ask anymore. hoping you find the right boy for your girls. :smitten:

I have had no bust ups with my pigs since they got the new hutch and none even when added the three babies last nov. I have just seen them having a mad five mins and popcorning allover the place in the shed they are happy.

I am in the process of looking for a secure run for them when the weather is better, which means they will be able to come and go at their leisure. Also I'm getting the shed made secure so can leave the wire mesh frame that goes in on the top of the barn door in permantly over night in the summer. Feel free to pop over anytime and you can see it for yourself.

I thought that i could give a boar a loving home when there are so many of them needing new homes. You always say its harder to find a boar a home than a sow. I could never replace Winter but know I could give another pig a loving home. Will know when i find the right pig for me.
