Do i need to provide a suitable enclosure for 3 big fat piggies?

I am going to put it on a coffee table so it really needs two tiers i think to get it a suitable size...

How big does it need to be and what on earth do i need to fix it together? Also what kind of flooring is best for the bottom layer and the second layer?

They will still have newspaper on top of it but i dont want any hay spilling onto the floor (the cage they have has sides on it so it doesnt happen...much!)...

Also i need it to be cleaned out easily...

CHeers!

use this site

www.guineapigcages.com

for 3 piggies you are looking 2x5. i have a two tier, here are my piccies, its 4x2 for 2 piggies and they love it! i would die without the two tier, they have so much fun with it!

flooring i use corragated plastic, like on the above site, and have 6 inch extra either side to stop hay etc flying out of it. I use also pro fleecing to line the cage with. Its so easy. I just lay the newspaper down, and have the profleece laying on top . I dustpan morning and evening for the stray poos and hay ( i have a hi bac litter tray where they wee and do poo and i keep the hay in here, then i have a paper bag on upper level full of hay for them to play in this contains all the hay and stops it flying about!) see the purple thing at the back.

when you get the grids, here are some links, you get connectors which connect it al together. I also use cable ties to extra secure it too.

Thanks that has helped ALOT! Thats about what i want for them and the plastic sounds and looks like what i need to...

Oooo i love trips to B and Q :))

Glad i can be of some help! Look forward to seeing the end result!

I cannot fit a 5ft cage anywhere in my house... Would a 4ft x 3ft be ok? I literally cannot fit this cage on any wall of my house... I dont have a spare room to put them in extra...

I may end up popping them outside after all...

I would have thought a 4 x 3 would be fine - I understand it to be the sq footage that they have - so a 4x3 would give at bit more then a 5 x 2 (not sure if that's right - others more experienced would be able to advise better.

I have just built a 4x2 for a pair of my piggies (another 4x2 in progress for when my new piggy arrives to pair up with Dacota)

Weena and Deablo love it and so far they have been getting on fine :)) (touches head frantically)

Well a 4x3 will fit in fine so "PHEW"!

Good luck wishes for Weena and Deablo (great names btw!)

This would give the same amount of living space as 5x2 the grid is just in a different place LOL

Ok Slight change of plan...

I am taking possession of a large dog crate... 46 inches across and 30 inches wide...

the piggies will now be going into there and having a second level as well... Thing is...

they will be on the floor... Now they are fine on the dining room table as they have nothing towering over them... How do nervy piggies cope on the floor? I know they are prey animals and anything above can scare them but will they get used to people being higher than them?

It would be great also because i can let them out and they can have floor space more often!

i have mine on the floor, i know alot of people dont and say not to, but mine are absolutely fine!

I dont have any other animals and its only me and my lodger... so we have a pretty quiet house... They will be completely enclosed and i will put a board over the top to give them a sense of safety so hope it will be ok ?/

they should be fine .mine dont have a cover even over them. ive never seen them so happy, I'm suire they will love it!

Ok technically they need 10sq ft of space for 3 piggies if 5ft x 2ft is the reccommended cage size...

So is 10sq ft of space ok if it is divided between two floors? I have no doubt my piggies will use both floors as they are getting lots more inquisitive...

I am really wanting to keep them inside and i can get a 3ft-4ft long dog crate in my house no problem it is 28 cm in depth and over 3 ft in height so plenty of room for a second level...

3ft x 2ft with two levels gives 10sq ft and 4ft x 2ft with two levels gives 16sq ft... when they are on the floor in the crate they can be let out for floor runs as well so they technically will get more space...

Edited to say i have been given the chance of two different sizes of dog crate and whilst the 4ft one is fine the 3ft one is perfect for a space i have that wouldnt encroach on the already small living space... and they will get floor space too...

The grids from B & Q are 14 inches square and the connectors fit between the grids so they come out a lot bigger in size, I know because I bought these grids and I am not sure the cage will fit in.rolleyes
