hi, my little minnie has been through a very hard time recently with losing her cage mate, introduction of new piggie. Through this time, she has been very hormonal again, previoulsy treated successfully with first time 1 injec and second time 2 injection course of chorulon. This time, she has nearly lost all her hair from her back and underneath at the side now. She has received two injections and I still don't see any signs of improvement, only slightly. Is it normal for chorulon to be less effective, is it something to do with her getting older?

How many injections would be considered to see if the treatment was successful. I have read on here courses of 5 injections over 5 weeks, 3 over 3? my vet has only every treated minnie and is unsure...

any advice very welcome for my minnie..

thanks.. susan, minnie, lemmy and poppy

I have had my 2 4yr old sows spayed within 3 months of each other - (one being Noodles my avar pig) my vet is an exotics specialist at a vet referral hospital, (one I think of only 5 actual hospitals in the u.k) - she has 7 or 8 pigs of her own and spayed all of them - she says that in the majority of cases the injections and hormone implants dont work,or only work for a short time - you may have to consider having your girl spayed - the cost is about £90 - I was terrified for my 2 girlies when I had them done, but the more experienced the vet with spaying the better - my second piggy was spayed and awake and eating within 25mins - unbelievable - thats about as much help as I can be

Hi Tan thanks, i read your threads re: spaying and it did give me food for thought..I think I will give the injections more of a chance, depending on what other advice I receive but if this doesn't work..i'm gonna have to put my own feelings aside and have her spayed.. i trust my vet fully and know that they would do their best... its just a horrible decision to make...

We did 5 over 5 weeks with our little girl. They reduced the cysts but sadly by not enough, that said here cysts turned out to be huge. It was also our vets first ever treatment of a guinea pig in this way, although I know she put a lot of time to research it.

Are you giving the injections as a treatment for Ovarian Cysts or is bit just for hormones in general.

From what I have read a fairly common dose is 2 injections about 4 weeks apart - I am unsure though as to whether these are a slightly higher dose or if there is a fixed dosage irrespective of time or number of injections. From what I understand the injections reset the hormones, perhaps they need longer than a week between which is why a 4 week gap seems to have had some success in cases I have read up on.

We subsequently changed vets and chose to have her spayed. We had a favourable outcome, but it was a big worry for us.

How old is she out of interest? Our Piglet was 5 when she had the injections.

Thanks Guineaguy...Minnie had a scan approx 2 years ago which revealed nothing but now vet says maybe they were just too small to see. At that time, her symptoms were dominance, constant heat and small bald patch on her neck, constant irritation and itching. She was treated for mites first which I believe she does get through stress of how she feels. At the moment, her nipples are very extended and crusty, nearly all her hair from back is gone, very irritable, stuck in season.. At first, the injections were given for hormonal imbalance due to lack of evidence on scan. The first two, 1 week apart worked a treat for about 8 months, the second round of think of 2 not so good.

We adopted both minnie and maxi so were never quite sure of their age, but i reckon 3.5? Maxi sadly passed away in December.. Maxi, her sister had ill health as well throughout her wee life. Minnie has never really been a happy pig with something always irritating her.. Its such a shame..I just want her to be happy..hopefully without inflicting too much pain...

I've read numerous threads on up to 5 injections but as you say what is the dose? I can only try another injection and delay any hard decisions I may have to make. Whilst writing this, if another injection doesn't work, I believe the best option is another scan see what this reveals? and go from there.

Would still be grateful for any other advice on chorulon..anyone had any long-term success?

Thanks, Susan, Minnie, Lemmy and Poppy
