After a long conversation with my friend about our pigs. I decided it would be interesting to see how many Guinea Pig's on this forum are getting veterinary treatment, are on long term medication, are being treated by someone that is a rodentologist or similar. Paranoia counts to, mites, fungal you name it. If your pigs got something please vote.

I currently have 3, but if we count Fred's teeth it's 4.

Currently just the one.

Patch has pneumonia. Thought we'd got rid of it but it's back again. He's on Zithromax at the moment and was doing really well but he seems to be having a bad day today.

Storm has her 2nd UTI.
Misty (crosses fingers) hs never had medication.

Hope Milo is ok xx

Cookie: Long haired aged 4 Receiving treatment for the 3rd time, for a skin complaint. She has just finished another course of Itrafungol. Supposed to be for cats!

Actually, you guys might be able to help. Although she has finished her course, she still seems to be itchy. The vet has advised there is nothing else she can have- she's pretty much had it all! This beautiful little lady cost me nearly £200 in 2 weeks for various tests, prescriptions etc!

I have 2 hutches and the other hutch has bale hay which is quite dusty. They are both smooth haired, as is Cookies friend, and they are fine with it.

Cookie's problems started last summer when we changed hay supplier, and used dusty hair for her. She got better, but has flared up twice since March, since we got the bale. I think the dust has been blowing into her hutch, and making her skin flare up.

Does anyone have any advice of ANYTHING I can try to make her better? She's eating and drinking really well, and although she has now gone blind in one eye, is still a beautiful little girl.

Not sure if the photo will work- first time on here!

I have two guinea pigs on permanent meds.

Hywel (who is otherwise healthy) has to be on a small dosis of metacam for the duration of his life to prevent a re-occurrance of his neutering post op adhesion problems, as an operation is not an option.

And Nerys who has chronic/interstitial cystitis and a fungal/not fungal? problem (I'm waiting for further lab results).

There is usually always something else so many ; Nia has just recovered from a limp, Cariad was treated for low impacted URI etc...

Long term treatment
Willow - leukaemia - steroids
Maple his brother - leukaemia and chronic arthritis - metacam. (Cyst due for removal soon owing to size)
Ginger - entropion/gunky eyes, query leukaemia as second generation (lipomas due for removal soon owing to location/size)

Recent
Bandit - has not been eating but it;s not his teeth - next step x ray for stones also query he has adhesion/gut motility issues
Tia - fungal ear - ongoing
Bailey - fungal patch on nose now clear

I currently have two lodgers: Snickers (belongs to Doeylicious) and Pierrot (Willow and Mape's one-eyed sister, with query leukaemia here on holiday ) Both have been given antifungal baths and mite treatment along with the rest.

Guess that's 8 but as the fungal/mite treatments have finished then as of today I only have 5 on active meds.....rolleyes

Teddy has two fatty lumps that have an infection in them. He is on Rimadyl, Baytril and Fibreplex

out of my 17 pigs they all seem healthy at the mo (touching wood as type) I had the scare of blood in the indoor C&C the other week and despite close monitoring none of the pigs are showing any signs of illness so lets hope it stays that way xx

It's sad to see how many piggies are feeling poorly, according to the poll so far it's at least 32 :( Get well soon all you pigsters x>>
I don't want to comment on my piggies as I don't want to jinx the situation :))

So far, no problems here ever apart from Big Dave having a snuffle after a GA 2 years ago and having to monitor Jeffs poor castration. So far so good!

Woog's currently on meds for her eye. She's on baytril, anti-inflammatory eye drops, and an antibiotic eye cream.

Nigel: heart arythmia, on Prilenal (sp?) long term and diuretic for a while
Honey: had pneumonia so on bayrtil and metacam and a diuretic but is showing all signs of heart problems so being investigated
Gertie: Ongoing skin issues that she has had since we got her, was always thought to be mites but is more psychological. Was on steroids but weened off them, now showing signs of it returning. Is having Dida and child's Nurofen and antifungal baths until she is seen at the next piggy clinic by a vet and rodentologist.

Out of my nine piggies i have one piggy on treatment. Wibble has an on going poblem with his spine and due to the twist in it walk with his head to one side. He is forever getting ear infections. :(

Snuggle has finally been "discharged" from the vet :)) after having the abscess removed from near his boy bit! He has had an opertation and 2 post op anti biotic jags. Just waiting for wound to totally heal and the glue to fall off now!

Touch wood and finger's crossed all my five are fighting fit.

That said, in the last 9 months or so, we've all had something...

Willow - Conjunctivitis (treated with eye-drops)
Pippa - Cyst (lanced and treated with baytril)
Boris - Abdominal abscess (treated as above)
Marmite - Very stubborn URI (long course of anti-biotics)
Pixel - Fatty eye (no treatment given)

I was worried that Boris had contracted a fungal infection about a fortnight ago, but a bath and some Gorgeous Guineas lotion cleared up whatever the problem was :)

Archie - dental issues - needs treatment every 10 days
Wilfie - dental issues plus jaw abscess - needs treatment every 14 days
Brownlow - dental issues (no top incisors) - needs treatment every 14 days
Bill - lethal gene piggie - needs regular monitoring
Ted - lethal gene piggie - needs regular monitoring

All these little guys will need regular treatment for the rest of their lives.

Putt has long term bladder issues that require cysteases and regular cartrophen injections as well as metacam.

She also has a suspected UTI and is on antibiotics and poo soup which is gross. She has had a significant weight loss this week but touch wood since starting the antibiotics has mantained her weight.

Cookie and Treacle are fighting fit.

I'm almost afraid to post because I fear I'll jinx myself, but right now:
Linney- age 2.5 years- no current medical issues (has had abscess issues and surgery in the past though)
Sundae- age 1 year- no current medical issues.

Now knock on wood that it stays that way... last summer was very expensive and very emotionally grueling because Linney had an abscess removed under general anasthesia and my other girl, Frenzy, had malocclusion, dental abscess in the tooth roots and jawbone, and eventually passed away. So I'm very much hoping that this summer is a better one for my piggies!

Just one: Munchie's abscesses. Though, fingers crossed, we do appear to be nearly all fixed up! The smaller most recently popped one only had a small opening so it practically healed up overnight (although I did have to open it up again to be sure it was flushed, which luckily it looks pretty good). The one that was left that I couldn't get to (under her chin) is actually shrinking. Didn't realise they shrank when left to monitor - the Baytril she was on for almost 3 weeks didn't do anything...

But she's looking good, a little off colour because I imagine she's in a little bit of discomfort as the two opened/healing ones are right on her shoulders so it must get sore when she's walking. Eating, drinking, pooping and generally being the little boss-pig that she is perfectly though, so I'm cautiously optimistic that we're over the worst of it now. I've not seen her since wednesday but I'm back home from uni tomorrow and she's going to get lots of cuddles. :)

you asked this question at just the right time as I have 0 at the moment and touch wood it stays that way. Bumble for once isn't scheduled for any further vets trips lol

I have been lucky so far with my babies, the only vet visit between 7 has been for a gender check on a shy boy :))

I know plenty of general animal care and medication so minor issues such as mites or slight condition loss I am able to deal with myself. I think the first time I get a serious pet issue I will likely cry.

none of my 3 are poorly at the minute but theyre only babies yet so theres still time for them to worry me! Ive only ever had one poorly piggy and that was bob the one we found at the side of the road almost dead but even then he only had problems at the very beginning of his life and then at the end when he was an old man! I hate it when they get ill its heart breaking although i am a big softie :))

Me and my fella usually have hamsters too but the last one we had (although old when she died, had a tumour inbetween the discs in her back so her back legs went) she was absolutely beautiful was rarely in her cage as she preferred to be sitting with us or running around the floor and both of us cried for days when she went (and he never cries)

hope all the poorly piggies get better soon!

Sherbet has a heart murmour and also a cyst but although has seen a vet for both these isnt actaully getting any treatment at the moment....although Ive to keep an eye on her.
Toffee - gets her teeth done
Ebony - has had her teeth done once
Cookie - she's fine
Candy - she's fine
Smartie - fine
Truffles - fine
Rolo - fine except has anger management issues at the moment....

Our little pippin died today at the Vets, :( his play mate snowball keeps poking his nose out of the cage looking for him.

RIP Pippin :(

I just wanted to post a small update on Munchie:

SHE IS OFFICIALLY LUMP FREE! There is only the feintest of signs that there was one under her neck, and the other three on her sides have healed up lovely and her coat is growing back where the scars are. She's looking so much better than she did last week and even felt up to giving me some piggy kisses on my nose.

I love her, she's an amazing pig; after all I had to put her through she's friendlier with me now than she has ever been! She even snuggled down on my chest yesterday, she's normally too on edge to relax properly on me. x) I just hope now that this is the end of it and I don't have to deal with another ill piggy for a loooong time to come!
