How much veg should I be feeding 3 piggies including a growing baby?
When I just had Eleanor and Eliza, they had a bowlful of veg twice a day that looked like this (the contents changing from day to day)

All 3 girls are now eating from the same bowl but there doesn't look a lot in there for 3 and they struggle to get all their heads in at the same time and I am trying to prevent fall outs. They have this bowl that I was using for dry food but would this filled with veggies twice a day be better for 3?

At present, I have got a bowl of Wagg guinea pig crunch and a bowl of Pets and home nuggets in their hutch which I top up again at night if it is running low. The bowl in my avatar has the crunch in it and the veg bowl at the top has the nuggets in it.

Does this all sound okay? Sorry for all the questions but I don't want them starving :))

Hi,

I believe it's 50g of veggies per pig per day, although i'm not sure if it's the same for a growing baby i'm afraid. I have 2 boars, and have 2 of everything in their cage, so I tend to split the veg up into 2 bowls. I give them their nuggets, then one serving of veg in the morning, and one serving early evening. I have hanging balls that I put their hay in, and I sometimes hide the veg in them for them to have fun with trying to get everything out!
Sorry I can't answer all your questions, i'm sure someone will come on with better advice :)

Perhaps you could get a double dish Claire, then there will be enough space for all those pig noses. Work on about a teacupful of mixed veg a day, and split it into two servings. Anything left after 30 minutes, take out, as it will go manky, attract flies, and they probably don't like it. (I leave in longer sometimes with piggies not used to veg, but this isn't the case for your girlies.) xx

1 cupful/50g of mixed veg per piggy per day.

Erin will need more pellets than the other two, as she is still growing fast. Do not try to give her an extra serving, but try to feed her a bit extra when you feed the others to avoid jealousy problems.

If you are having problems with them not getting their noses in the bowl i occasionally make them forage to find it rather than just picking it out of a bowl

I don't feed my veggies in a bowl. As I chop my veggies, I put them into plastic containers and put an appropriate amount into each for whichever cage it is for. I then take the veggies out in the containers and scatter the contents all over the cage floor. In that way all the pigs get a chance to eat them, rather than the bossy ones pushing the quieter ones away from a bowl. I know some people might think it wrong to scatter the veg on the floor, but although we would find it unacceptable to eat our food from the floor, they are animals and don't have the same table manners! :))

I'm a scatterer too. No bowls for veggies. A great big tray of all the veg, then I dole out according to how many in the cage. Definitely agree, if you have one more dominant pig, they can hog the bowl. Scattering alleviates this. x

Hehe- yea i don't think they mind. I just scatter veg on the floor too, wouldn't they forage around for food in the wild anyway?

I also dot some grass and hay around the cage- they love running though it scattering it around their cage lol. It might make it look messy but i just get the dust pan and brush on it so doesn't take long- if it keeps them happy then i'm happy lol! :)

Mine have hay all around the cage, plus readigrass. No hayracks for me! They love playing in the hay and hiding under it. Personally I don't like to see a tidy cage that looks all pretty. I think too many people humanise their animals. I love all mine for being animals! In many cases I prefer animals to humans anyway! :))

Jimmy and George have a cereal bowl full between them a day as well as their hay and pellet. We scatter the veg too and dont have to worry about it going manky as it's gone before you can blink:))

I fill my big chopping board and have a set routine, however some piggies are getting wise to this method (Pea and Pod) and hijack the chopping board, taking off their favourites first, Peanut likes to stand his front 2 legs on it, so I can't pull away and uses it as his personal breakfast plate, whilst Pod sneaks in from behind and uses all the extra time to pinch extra for them both.rolleyesrolleyes Think I'm going to start using a veggie bowl, but it really cheers me up in a morning so I'm reluctant to change.

Maybe that's what they're whispering about here :)

Everybody else waits in turn, and apart from when introducing new vegetables, everything is munched away in about 10 minutes. After tea time they get a smaller portion of vegetables, it's like an ending to the routine and they settle down for the night.

Thanks for your replies :) I really want my new hutch to come now (it should be here next week) so that I can buy lots of new bowls and trays. The double bowl sounds great for the dry food as they have both wagg guinea pig crunch and pets at home nuggets.

Because the hutch they are in at the minute is a 4 x 2 I can't fill it with lots of bowls as that and 3 piggies = rolleyes but I want to get everything prepared for when the new hutch arrives :)

I used to feed their veggies in a bowl but had the same problem; not all heads could fit in it at once & the more dominant pigs would eat first.
As i chop veggies i put them into individual jugs (which have the pigs names on) because they don't all like the same; some like tomatoes, some don't, some like apple, some don't.

When i take the jugs out to the shed i scatter the veg into their hutches & this enables everyone to get what they want & they do pick out their fave bits first. :)

I feed on big plates as half of them are doing a snatch and run. That way, all heads do fit at once and everypig can pick what they like. Thankfully, most of them are not too choosy!

Mine don't eat there veg from a bowl, i just put it on the fleece and they come out and grab it. Only there mix is in a bowl, which they tend to tip over.
