I just adopted two teeny babies. They are approx 8 weeks old. I was told to feed them alfalfa for now but I wanted to be sure that I'm not overdoing it. How much should they be getting? So far I've been letting them free feed themselves. We've owned them less than a week and suddenly it occurred to me that perhaps the alfalfa is supposed to be a SUPPLEMENT to regular hay? I haven't been able to find an answer anywhere.

Thanks in advance.

Just to clarify, that isn't the only thing I've been feeding. They are also receiving Oxbow pellets and a variety of fresh veg and fruit. Actually that's another question I have, how much fruit and veg should they be getting at this young age? I've just been tossing little bits in here and there. They of course, go MENTAL, squealing their little lungs out. lol

What i do for my guinea pigs under 6 months is give them an alfalfa based pellet and timothy hay. They should have unlimited amounts of hay at all times. After 6 months switch to a timothy based pellet and limit their intake to 1/8 per day/pig. Still unlimited hay though! They need to constantly be wearing down their teeth since they constantly grow.

The pellet feed I'm giving them is alfalfa based. Does this mean they're getting too much alfalfa? I purchased the alfalfa hay on the advice of the guy at the pet store where I went to purchase food and supplies.

Haha yes they eat alot! No you want an alfalfa based pellet for the first 6 months of life. Make sure you switch after 6 months and limit the intact of pellets. As for the veggies try to feed a cup/day/pig. Twice a day is ideal(1/2 a cup in the morning and night). If they are not use to veggies yet start off slow and don't give up if they won't eat it at first just keep offering it. They should be getting green pepper and red/green leaf lettuce as stable veggies. Rotate other veggies daily. Try different fruits and veggies and see which ones your piggies like. Mine go crazy over pineapple of all things!

Ok great, glad to know I'm doing it right. They were receiving fruit and veggies in their original home so they're good there, I just wasn't sure how much, so thanks for that! I'm looking forward to experimenting and seeing what they like and who likes what. Watching their little personalities develop is really something. :)
