I just got two new guinea pigs, a 7th-month-old and a 1-month-old, and I was wondering how much I should feed them. The Veterinary Association said about 1/8 a cup of pellets, a cup of vegetables, and unlimited hay was the best per guinea pig, but that sounds like a lot of vegetables to me.

Also, what are some of the best fruits and vegetables for baby guinea pigs? I was told that Alfalfa hay and pellets would be bad for the older one so that it would be better to just feed them both timothy hay. Currently, that is what I am doing but I wanted to know if there were any treats or produce high in calcium that I could feed the baby.

My boy Finn and Lara get veggies three time a day.
Morning— romaine lettuce, or baby spring veggies with small amount of herb like cilantros, parsley, basil and etc. Fresh hay and pellets.
Lunch— cilantro, parsley, basil, dandelion, and etc. A couple of times a week, I give them half of baby carrot, and small piece of fruit like apple or blueberry.
Dinner— romaine lettuce or baby spring veggies with herbs. Fresh hay and pellets.

This is the daily routine I kept for a very long time so my piggies are used to it.

Ours get veg 3 times a day, a typical menu might look like this:

Breakfast: 3 cucumber slices and 2 carrot slices per piggy, hay and pellets
Playtime snack: 3 or 4 stems of parsley or coriander (cilantro) per piggy, or maybe some freshly cut clover or dandelions, extra hay
Dinner: whatever veg we are eating mostly so its different every day but popular options are 1) beansprouts and red peppers, 2) spinach (6 to 8 leaves per piggy) and sweet potato, 3) broccolli (2 florets per piggy) and apple (2 slices per piggy). Mine wont eat squash or pumpkin which is annoying because we eat it every week, but some piggies might eat it!
Broccolli and spinach are high calcium veg I think. You should check out the feeding guides on the forum, they are very good :)

Thanks so much for the help! I was just wondering, how much of the romaine lettuce and other regular greens do you give them in total each day? I know obesity is supposed to be really bad for them, but I also do not want to underfeed them.

I would just give them a bowlfu of pellets in the morning to eat throughout the day and vegetables aswell, and then a bowlful of pellets during the night and more vegetables to eat throught the night x that way the Guineas pigs will not become hungry and will eat at there own pace! x

I give them two leaves of romaine lettuce a day for breakfast and dinner along with various herbs in small amounts. For lunch, I give them more herbs like cilantro, parsley, basil, and etc.
Every week, romaine lettuce is replaced with baby spring veggies, then romaine lettuce comes back after a week of baby spring veggies.
I was told at least a cup of veggies a day for Finn and Lara and they definitely get that amount of veggies, maybe even a cup and a half. I think they get half of a cup of veggies with each meal, and they get three meals a day.

Fruits are given with caution in very small amount. They will finish fruits before they finish veggies so I know how much they love fruits. They only get fruits a 2-3 of times a week.

When Lara came to me from a friend who didn’t want her, she was long and very skinny. She is rounder now from the top and her bottom looks rounder too.

in my opinion one cup of veg is not enough for a piggie, mine get about 70g of veg each day
