Maple is sounding a bit chesty at times. She saw a locum vet on Thursday who said she wasn't bad but would give some antibiotics and anti-inflammatory. The vet looked up in books to assess the dosage. My concerns is that the dosage seems very small. I can't remember how much Maple was given the last time she had a chest infection or how much Tara was given post surgery for Ovarian cysts but it was more than the 0.1 ml twice a day that Maple has been prescribed. When Tara was prescribed dog Rheumocam, the dosage was 0.7 ml twice a day but Maple has been prescribed 0.15 ml once a day, which also seems very little.

I'm concerned the locum hasn't prescribed enough antibiotics or Rheumcocam and before I see another vet, I wanted to see if anyone knows how much is usually prescribed. Thanks.

Hi

All medication comes in a safe range for each species that allows your vet to consider and weigh up the severity of symptoms, body weight, age/fitness, the interaction with other medications etc. to decide where on the species specific bandwith they are going to place your piggy.

That is why you cannot ask on here for standard doses because it is like comparing apples with pears.

Your girl has obviously got only rather mild/borderline symptoms so your vet has opted for the lower end of the band. Would you be up against pneumonia or one of the really nasty bugs, then they would go all out.
Dosages for bacterial respiratory illnesses (exceptt pneumonia or some of the real nasties) tend to be generally lower than those for the urinary tract anyway.

Rheumocam (dog strength 1.5 ml/mg metacam) is not needed for respiratory illnesses unless there are other considerations in play.

See how it goes and then take it from there. If symptoms are getting worse, then your vet will review and prescribe higher dosages.
