Okay so technically this is more about a rabbit but also asking for Guinea Pigs so I thought I'd post it here :P

Getting my rabbit Chappy spayed (I read it was good as it removes any ovary related cancers risks which is 80% by four years old) and will help with her new aggression that came with the sexual maturity! I can't even pick her up right now it's so bad. Hoping that will calm her down.

Anyway, the vet I'm thinking of using (ROWE) are asking £100 minimum for a spay? Are you kidding me? That seems like a lot. A similar price was set when Cookie underwent her emergency spay; but since she died they cut the price down to £50. It was originally going to be about £130 for Cookie for all the intestine care she would have needed after surgery. (I miss you, baby Cookie. Ugh.)

That seem right to you? They better flipping well answer all my questions and have an extremely high success rate and better not let anything happen to my baby bunny if they're asking that much!

Most vets charge the same for a spay / castrate for a rabitt or guinea pig - i use 2 different vets and they both charge £60 for a neuter and £90 for the spay - i have had 2 girlie pigs spayed - came to £130 with all meds including gut stimulant and pain relief afterwards.

It's going to depend on where you go (eg inner city vs a smaller practice etc). But don't skimp on price, find a good vet and this may mean paying a little more, make sure they are rabbit savvy! Give pain relief, pro kinetics etc. The costs are there for a reason, you are paying for a professional and a professional team to do what might seem an easy job from the outside but is a complex skill.

Rabbits to spay will be cheaper than a Guinea pig (generally because it's easier and a more routine procedure that a lot of vets do). Guinea pigs are more complex to spay and I would always find an experienced vet or exotic specialist for this. As for costs I would say the following and these are approximates (given that I paid over £100 for each of my piggie spays this year)

Rabbit spay £50-80
Guinea pig spay £80-100

I should also add, it would be worthwhile getting insurance.

Thanks for the reassurance, guys. I feel happier now. Still scared to spay her and it's been a pretty rough day - a lorry nearly crushed me on the ring road this afternoon, first near miss I've had since I've passed my test and shocked me and then the guy I like got with someone else in my class - pretending to be happy for them is so going to suck.

I just can't wait until Chappy is back to her old cuddly self!

Thanks for the rough guideline for pricing. I'm just hoping she pulls through all okay.

i think that sounds about right and is a reasonable price if you are seeing a rabbit savvy exotics vet (a must in my opinion)

on the rabbit forum, the approx costs for rabbit spays are usually given as £80-100 depending on the area :)

The health check went okay! She's booked in for the operation on Monday. My vet assured me that she has had plenty of success and in her twelve years of working with the practice, she's only had one rabbit anesetic death. She assured me that Chappy is in very good condition and as long as I provide the correct after care, she sees absolutely no problem with her having complications.

After Cookie; I'm scared as anything. Little Chappy has bounced her way into my heart, and I feel so guilty spaying her...
