Threepigs

I keep reading that gps should have a 'cup' of fresh food a day, but do people mean a tea-cup, a mug, or what? Should the food be packed down tight, or just loosly filled? We give lots of grass at the moment and I wonder if I give too much (though they eat it and don't seem to have runny tummies (can't spell the 'd' word!).

Many thanks

I do aprox a largish mug of veg per pig per day.

I tend to chop it up for them. An average carrot would end up as about 5 to 8 chunks, broccoli I chop all the top bits off and slice the stem, peppers I cut in half, remove seeds and then cut each half in half again. Runner beans I usually chop in half and things like greens I tend to not cut so much. With a cabbage I will slice a 1 inch bit off the end and just brake the layers apart with my fingers.

The main reason I do all this is to make sure every one gets a bit of everything. If I was to stick a whole carrot in one of the guinea pigs would nick it and run off not allowing the other to have a bite.

I also give a good chunk of hay in the mornings and top up if needed.

Mine don't have grass right now as we have just moved in to a new house and I don't want to give them grass till I have re-seeded the lawn as I don't know if the people before us use to treat the grass with any weed killer and such so I need to strip it all out. I have started growing grass in litter boxes for them but its not very long yet LOL

mine have a small bowl that i fill **** 6 slices of cucumber cut into 1/4's or 3 cherry tomatoes cut in halves, a celery stick cut up into 1inch cubes. They get that once a day and usually some more cucumber fed from hand when being handled. They have hay every other day in there cage but top up if needed inbetween time. They have a fresh bowl of dried food (2 large handfuls) daily too amongst other treats in there cage. mine are still babies though and dont want to feed them. they get to go on the grass once/twice per week depends on weather really and when the grass is cut they get quite a few large handfuls in there cage which they love x)

Thank you both. I think we're probably giving about the right amount then.

Mine get fed their veg in one of those plastic takeaway containers that some chinese shops use.

They get fed it once a day, with treats of romaine, carrot or cucumber at lap time.

Each bowl has a base of a selection of lettuce (not Ice berg - I buy the selection bags but check the contents first!) and carrots. To that I add on rotation:
Spring Greens - once/twice a week
Cabbage - once a week
Cellary - twice a week
Tomatoe - three/four times a week
Parsely - every other day
Brussel Sprout - once a week
Baby Sweet corn - three times a week
Runner beans - twice a week
Grapes (only one per piggy couple times a week)
Apples (small peice once a week)
Strawberries - once / twice a week

They have ad lib hay and pellets. I refresh their hay in the morning when I clean their litter trays out (as mine like to sleep in the hay racks :p)

I overfill a medium sized bowl and chop everything up so that they share nicely. I give mine veg/fruit once a day (usually when I'm having my dinner). They have a constant supply of hay and dry pellets. They also get some readigrass in the morning too.

i am at the moment just going to buy the basics, carrots, celery, cucumbers, apples, cherry toms and cabbage -with prices going up, until i can grow my own veg, i need to try and cut some costs down as i end up spending nearly £30 a week on the piggies, cos they are spoilt, but for now will just be having the basics with of course their dry food and hay.

Mine have a bowl between the two of them of a least 5 different veggies in the morning and one again at tea time. I buy what ever is cheapest or whatever I get most points on in Tesco. I also have those herb grow pots on the windowsill. They are really good, the more you cut the more you grow. Giving them just bits of each seems to make them last longer.
