I know a lot of you don't shop in pets at home but I just wondered for those of you who do how long does the large own brand hay last when you give it to your piggies. My 2 get through a bale a week and wondered am I giving them too much. This is for bedding and eating. They also have the other speciality hats normally Alfalfa king brand, its Timothy hay though.

You can never give them too much piggies. I buy a bale of Ings hay from hayforpets which is 9.5 kilos and £16. I think it is a good bargain.

Oh that's a good deal I will have a look. I did buy some from natures own which were really god value as I got straw for my chickens and hay for the piggys. Hmmm think I might switch back as I'm sure it lasted so much longer.

I have just started having hay from the dust-free hay company. It lasts really well & is much better quality than the p@h one which I found so dusty & really short chopped last time I emergency bought some!

I would easily have got through a p@h bale a week but that was for 4 piggies last time I bought that hay.

I would give as much hay as your piggies will eat plus some extra for stamping on, weeing on etc! ;) They can never get too much hay :)

I'm contemplating getting this as well but wondering how is it delivered? Is it in a box? For me it will have to be work delivery so need to check it will be in a fit state to stay in the office for a few hours and then fit in my car boot, lolol.

I found when i had a hutch i used a lot more hay then i do now we are on fleece so wouldn't say your using that much. I have 15 boys and get through 2.5kg meadow hay and 2 bags of hay (i buy a bale from horse stables and bag it up) a fortnight and thats just for eating :)

They eat a fair amount don't they! I'm surprised when I sit and watch them how much they demolish! I think at the moment as its cooler through the night I'm putting a lot more hay in their bedroom area as I don't want them to get cold. I'm going to try and see if I can source from elsewhere

Chickens? I want to see photos and names! I love chickens.:)

It is in a strong plastic bag which you can hold by the handle but it is heavy.

These were the ex battery chickens that I rescued in July 2011 along with the blue chicken who is called storm and the different coloured brown chicken which is called a skyline hen and her name was nutmeg. She was a beautiful hen and we only had her5 months and she was sadly killed by a fox attack. We still have storm. We have lost all but one of the 6 exbatts that we rescued.

This was the ex battery hens and dazzle the white hen who sadly got killed at the same time as nutmeg, they were inseperable and lived in the green coop you can see.

This is a lovely piccy of them mooching with my cat!

This was beautiful dazzle, she was a special little hen

And these are my 2 new ones called mango and caramac!

We did have 9 but we now have 5, I adore them x

No that was mr red not dazzle, here she is

And my cat with the hens

Oh wow they are all so unique and gorgeous. Thank you for showing me them. It is lovely to have a garden and be able to have chickens. I live in a flat.

You can put them on some allotments! : )

I'm SO JEALOUS OF YOUR GARDEN! I want to be a chicken.

As for the P@H big bags.. I used to get through one of those in 2 weeks but I mixed equal parts with tommothy hay or meadow hay. Seasonal variations in them are ridiculous - sometimes it came out like straw and other time like tiny scrappy threads. :/ When a good batch was brought in I used to buy LOADS. I never realised you could buy in bulk online. I thought it would be too expensive but it works out a similar price.

Lol! Thankyou xx

Yes natures own sell meadow hay and I think 5 large bales about double the size of pets at home but compacted so not huge in size with delivery is 19.99. They will also do a mix if you need straw and hay which us great if you have rabbits aswell. I am always a bit worried about getting hay from a local source at a farm wonder what your experiences have been. I agree the pets at home hay is very short and better for bedding than eating.

Rule of thumb for farm hay if the horsey people buy it then its good stuff as they won't feed their horses rubbish ;) I get mine from two sources ones my dads friend has a share in some stables so i get bales via him and also i go to a farm shop that deals with horse products etc.... its always sweet smelling and fresh and the piggies go mad for it. Also get my carrots from there too £1.50 for a sack :))

I don't think that you can give them too much, considering how important it is. We are considering this year to make our own hay so that we know that every guinea pig eats healthy and natural hay. Although, they tend to dissipate the hay around the whole cage, making their own bedding arrangements :)

Oh they love to trample it down like a herd of elephants!

I have saved this link and I think I will try this one and see how it is. Many thanks for this link.

I buy a large bale from a local farm where they do hay for their horse & pony. It's just £4 for a large bale that does for bedding & eating. It lasted about 3 months for 4 piggies. I've got 5 now so it will probably last a week or two less but it is great value & fresher than shop bought hay.

I too buy Ings hay from hay4pets. Mine love it. They have an unlimited supply. The boys have a hayrack which is topped up once or twice a day and the girls have their C&C loft full of hay which they like to sleep in and pee on as well as eat. :)

Well I went to a farm shop today to get some local produce and they sold huge bags of very sweet smelling green hay for £1.80, bargain! I think it might last me 2 weeks as I'm not putting as much in for bedding due to it being warmer x
