I have recently started using a hay rack in my piggies' hutch. When I just put the hay in their hutch loose, I could never tell how much they ate and how much they trampled down. Anyway, I'm worried they aren't eating enough, so for those of you who also use a hay rack, how often do you have to refill it? I have two piggies and I refill twice a day, but really they only eat one rack load in one day.

Hmm ours have big hay bags which are topped up daily or when they need.

Have you tried a different kind of hay with them? I find that 8 of ours are fine with Ings from hay for pets but 2 aren't as keen so they have B&M meadow hay which is quite nice to say how cheap it is.

There have been the odd incidents with various hay racks and hay bags. Personally, I only use hay trays, having had the odd piggy jumping into them and nearly coming to grief.

But this is very much in the range of personal judgment, like having ramps in a guinea pig cage (which I do).

Thanks @Wiebke

The bags we have the piggies are able to get out of if they go in and on the younger lads the holes are too small for them to get in. I think it's like you said, personal judgement.

I have meadow hay in the litter trays and Timothy hay in the hay racks. My hay racks are bent over gridd

I use hay racks and touch wood never a problem, if your unsure maybe get some chicken wire to go round the inside of it to prevent them getting into it but allowing the hay to come through.
Failing that you can get the metal cubes that hay goes into.
I always make sure they have hay, sometimes this means topping up twice a day, as like you you, they do trample it and pee on it etc
In addition to their racks i do put some in corners of hutch too, to ensure theres no squabbling over it

I buy farm blaes of hay so never really worry about how much is wasted, I put more than they will eat so they never run out plus t help keep them warm in winter as they also burrow under it x

I use 3 cat litter trays, one for each piggie. I empty, clean and refill them in the evening, then top them up in the morning. As soon as they're done the girls dive in and start munching.
