Hi. Over the last couple of weeks I've been adding a lot of hay for our pups overnight as the temperature drops. They are sheltered outdoors. They seem to spread it about very neatly and I'm failing to judge how much they actually eat of it and also whether they are rejecting the hay that they have had a wee/ poo on or near. Should I be getting a hay rack/stack for 'eating hay? How fussy are they or is that down to individual personalities? Thanks!

If i see alot of poos i know enough hay has been eaten. I dont use hay racks

I go by the same theory as above but also the look of them.
My two have several hay piles which they burrow into, eat and poop on! I can’t tell how much of it they actually eat either as they flatly refuse to use hay racks.

Mine are quite happy eating the hay in the burrowing/pooping/weeing/tray, but I'm wary of giving them coarse hay to jump into in case they poke their eyes. So they also have a hay rack (which was meant to keep things tidy, but they just reach up and pull it out the top so they can spread it around) and an egg box with holes in the ends that I put coarse hay in. I suspect they're not bothered, but I feel better knowing they always have access to clean hay.

Rose and Rosie like the local meadow hay and are happy and prefer to eat the hay they sit sleep poo and wee in! I keep their sleeping quarters full of hay at bed time by the morning I find they have trampled it into little dens for themselves!

Good point. The look of the poo

I prefer to keep the hay they poo in separate, from the hay in the hay rack, mine do tend to keep the hays separate.
Ive heard stories of guinea pigs getting there top front teeth stuck on hay racks. And because of having short legs they cant get free. Makes me cringe. But i think it might be certain hay racks

We have a hay room area with meadow hay for general playing and pooping in, plus 2 small corner haytrays where I put the expensive feeding hay. But generally they poop and wee in and eat from all these places regardless of what I do!
I do a full cage clean twice a week so it's always fairly fresh, but Theo in particular likes to eat hay after ladies have weed and pooped on it first :)

My piggies get endless hay. They are both indoor piggies and they get loads of hay to do whatever they want. I do end up throwing some away but I load with fresh hay for them.
Finn has hay pile he jumps into and a ball of hay toy he rolls around and eat the hay off of.
Lara has a hay rack and she piles hay on the floor to pee and poop on. I believe she eats some of it.

Bill and Ted don’t care as long as there’s loads of a hay. A bit of poo and wee never did anyone any harm. I’ve tried to educate the boys to eat from hay racks but they just ignored it. I suppose they are just pigs after All!

I just shove whacking great piles in, it effectively works as it's own hay rack really..they create tunnels and little dens inside it so a lot of it is kept off of the floor and clean, although my lot seem to not mind essence of toilet on the hay they eat, they're not fussy!

I do too the wacking great piles

Just out of interest, has anyone ever had a pig that loves red pepper and wheaks for it? Burnie is in love with it

my two got red pepper in their salad tonight (after a few days of just yellow pepper because it was all I had!), they looked like it was the best meal in the world! Red pepper is definitely their favourite

Dot wont eat unless i give her lettuce. If i put the rest in without lettuce. She sniffs as high as she can in the air
