I am just wondering how much everyone pays for castration? my vets here charge £45 but were actually unsure on the price as never done a guinea pig just rabbits being the smaller animal they have done :)

If they have never done guineas before, I would strongly recommend trying to find a local vet close to you who is experienced. £45 seems an average price, although I have a good one here in Kent who charges less than £30, but have heard that some will charge up to and over £80! Graham (Sokel) is up in Cumbria, it may be worth PMing him to see who he uses as he may be able to recommend a good one in the county :)

I agree, worth asking how many they've done before, as it's not a simple procedure for piggies.

Price seems to vary from £40 to £70 depending on your area.

No way would I let a vet who had not done it practice on one of mine! Graham may know, as previous post says, I would ring around for prices, and anyone who wasn't sure, forget about. Ask when ringing about the op and see how knowledgeable they are too. x

Well one vet who was in at the time said they'd never done one but there is a older female vet who they thought might of, so I think tomorrow I might go in and leave my number for her to ring me. I'd only let that vet do it if she was 110% convincing he'd be safe with her ... might ring frame and swift vets here too though :)

I just paid £57 for Junior. It is expensive, but my vets practice is fantastic!

That fee included a pre-operation check, i.e. weight, condition, heart and breathing and obviously if the boars bits had dropped ok, if you know what I mean!

Then the operation and two post-op checks ... one after two days and then another after 10 days.

I have had four boars neutered by that vet and had no problems. Perhaps it would be a good thing to ask local vets how many castrations they carry out on average per year on a guinea pig and their success rate. You might be the first to ask them that question, but hey don't worry!

My vets charged £72! I could have got cheaper but I have 110% faith in my vet surgeon so would rather pay the extra for peace of mind. It seems to vary a lot!

Hi Becky I use Firth Veterinary Practice in Annan - would be about 40-45 mins from you in Penrith I expect.

They have done a lot of castrations for me and I think they are wonderful. They have me under a Rescue Account for guinea pig treatment - it should be £45 but they charge me £27 for castration

I use Alston vets and they do a special rate of £30 for me as a rescue but I will only use the one vet from the practice

Oh is that tiny one still there? I once took a friends hamster and the vet spent ages bemused as to why its cheeks were huge - even i knew why lol that was over 10yrs ago though
