I am confused!

I told my vet that I would buy some xeno online as it's cheaper, for their mites. She was fine with this and we worked out that it was cheaper to buy xeno 450 and use less than a pipette.

If I was using xeno 50, it would be 4 pipettes for Treacle at 830g being 200 micrograms (I think that's what that symbol is)

BUT working it out using xeno 450, 20 drops is for a 1,200g guinea pig, which is 1 drop per 60g of guinea pig, so that would be 13-14 drops for Treacle at 830g. 14 drops is 315 micrograms (1 drop is 22.5).

So, working out dosage using xeno 450 results in more ivermectin. I find it hard to measure the drops and I'm worried about over dosing.

I have xeno 450 and about to treat them!

She said around 3 quarters of a pipette if using xeno 450, which is right. It is strange though that works out as more using xeno450 than xeno50.

If you use them correctly using both, you should have some for another time. 20 drops seems a lot. What happens if you lose count. With our adults we use a whole pipette & the same for the ones under 850g

There are 20 drops in a tube of xeno450, losing count isn't a problem but getting the right size drop is. One pipette of xeno 450 is meant to be for guinea pigs 1,200g plus but mine sometimes get the whole thing too as it's so hard to measure out!

It is not the volume of the carrier fluid (which is needed to make it work as a spot-on), but the ivermectin amount that counts. Xeno 50 is a lower concentration than xeno 450, so you cannot compare them directly.

It's been over 24hrs and they're still scratching, does anyone know how long it takes to take effect on the current live mites?

The itching is likely to get a bit worse during the first 48 hours as the ivermectin is absorbed into the skin and working on the mites. After that, it should start dying down. You will notice it slowly creeping back up when it comes closer to the second round, but it should not be as bad and should disappear completely about 2 days after the second round. A third round takes care of any emerging stragglers.

Thank you, that's really useful to know. Clove, my grey fluffy, is really biting her back quite a lot today.

I treated them on Tuesday afternoon and I'm still seeing scratching and a bit concerned, it may not be as much scratching though. I hope 60 degrees really is killing the mites, I've been washing their bedding etc daily to keep on top of the mite situation.
