So I just bought this trixie multi fruit paste for my guinea pig and it doesnt say anywhere on how much of it to give to my guinea pig daily. I was wondering if anyone had this too and if anyone knows the amount of this to feed daily.

I wouldn’t feed that. They need mainly hay, a cup of veg and a tablespoon of pellets per day. Fruit shouldn’t feature in their daily food diet. And they shouldn’t have malt (grain) in their diet either. Who suggested you give it to them? And do you have one or two? They need companionship.

I didnt think to feed him this mainly, i was thinking that after i give him his normal food i would just to put a little bit of this paste on my finger and give it to my guinea pig since it says that it prevents hair balls in his stomach and boosts digestion so i thought it would be good for him. Thank you for your reply though! Ill defenitely search a bit more about this before giving it to him :D

No it’s not going to be good for him. Please don’t use it, it’s completely unnecessary. A lot of these products sold for small animals are either unnecessary or unhealthy. I’ve kept small animals for 30 years and not once have I ever come across a hairball. Its just an unnecessary product and a way of getting you to part with money

Please also ensure your guinea pig lives with another guinea pig. They are highly social animals and must live in pairs at all times. A single piggy is a lonely piggy.

Thank you for your advice!

He’s not likely to develop hairballs. And to be honest I’m not sure how malt and fruit would prevent it or aid digestion. I advise you not to give it at all. There’s no need to search about it. You have to be careful with pet shop bought foods/treats as said above.

When will you be able to get him a friend?
I most likely wont be. Now i know you may think that this is very wrong, but before getting him, I have looked into caring for an only piggie in lots of trusted sites. I spend almost all day with him since my only responcibility is school and of course I dont have him out when I'm sleeping. I do my homework with him, study with him and have floor time with him. I have also looked into the signs of loneliness in guinea pigs and he has none i am very sure of it. Also, he is a male and all of the sites that have advice for sigle piggies heavily reccomend having a malw piggie for an only one because they are more likely to be fine on their own. Also if he ever does show signs of loneliness i will defenitely be getting him a friend. I hope you understand and thank you for your concern but dont worry since i have lots of time for him and i am very sure he is fine!

Please read our forum guides, compiled by our very experienced experts- all guinea pigs need the company of their own species, and they really dont need fruit pastes adding to their diet.
Much of what you may find online is not carefully researched, while all our care guides are!

Thank you again! As i said, i wont be feeding him the paste, and i have looked trough lots of information on here too. As i said, i am defenitely going to get him another piggy if he shows signs of loneliness and similar things. But for the time being, he is fine. I am always looking for more information on taking care of guinea pigs, and if i do find changes in his behaviour, he will defenitely getting a friend!

He wont necessarily show signs of loneliness. His survival instinct kicks in so they get on with life, they survive but they don’t thrive, but it does not mean he is truly happy. The change in him if he has a friend will astonish you.
It is also one of the five animal rights that they are kept with a companion of their own species, so be denying him a friend, and only looking for signs of loneliness you are going against the animal welfare rights.
There are so many of us who keep two male piggies - I am one myself. Its simply about having character compatibility

Thank you for telling me! I will be looking more into this!

The guides below will help you further. Its simply essential he has a friend so that you can meet his lifelong happiness and needs.
As PigglePuggle has said there is a lot of misinformation online and I can assure you that if you have come across things saying that male piggies are better by themselves or that any piggy is ok to be kept by itself, then it is simply incorrect and should be disregarded.

I think you need to do rather than look into. He has a right to companionship of his own kind. Keeping him single would be the same as you living in a room by yourself and never having any human contact at all, for the whole length of your life your only interaction would be with a bear. Can you see how the interaction would be limited?

I’m sorry to say but if you decide to keep him single then you are thinking more about your needs and not his. You don’t need to wait for him to start showing signs of loneliness.
