Hi there,

Claude has been prescribed Baytril today for an abscess. I understand it is important to give a probiotic 1-2 hours after the antibiotic is administered. I have some Pro-C Probiotic which I would like to syringe feed him. Could anyone advise as to how much to give and in how much water? I understand that the dosage is 1 scoop per 200ml of drinking water but I don't really want to make that much up and then waste it. Also, how much of the diluted Pro-C formula do I syringe feed him?

The Pro-C pot was opened last May ish but there is no shelf life on the label. Will it still be ok to use?

Alternatively I have another piggy and can make poo soup - is that a sufficient option?

Thanks in advance.

I tend to just put a sprinkle in a small amount of water which is probably not that helpful. You could use half a scoop in 100ml of water and then give as much as you can throughout the day. If it has been open over 6 months though it is OK for now but I would get a newer tub when you can.

Thank you for your quick replies. I made up the 1 scoop per 200ml formula and syringe fed him about 5ml. I'll get a new tub tomorrow. I also got a fresh poop from his buddy, cut it in half and mashed it in some water and syringe fed him that. Hope this is all ok.

No piggy kisses for me tonight though!

If in doubt, give about a pinch in 1-2 ml of water and syringe that. ;)

Perfect thank you. But what I've done so far is ok?

It is OK; generally things can be kept open for half a year, but in an emergency you can use older probiotics until you can get a fresh batch.

Has the abscess been removed or just lanced and let to drain?

Basically, I noticed it last night when I was weighing him. Clegg and Claude had a bit of an altercation Saturday night which we didn't think much about at the time. They've been together around 6 months and apart from the usual rumble strut they are generally fine but it's obviously a result of a bite. When I noticed it, the scab came away and I managed to flush it with a syringe and some diluted hibiscrub and squeezed out as much gunk as I could. I took him to the vets first thing this morning who prescribed 5 days worth of Baytril (0.3ml twice a day). She felt the lump and thought that it was mainly inflamed and that I had removed most of the pus as she couldn't get out any more. She advised me to cleanse with hibiscrub once a day but no need to flush again. She was also happy for me to let it scab over. Although I know my vets very well this was the first time I met this one (she only started in Sept) and am not overly convinced by her advice as it seems to go against what I have read. She never mentioned probiotics which was again something I researched. She doesn't need to see him unless I am concerned and asked if he was eating and pooing ok (which he is). Tonight after giving his antibiotics I cleansed his wound with diluted hibiscrub and managed to get out some more gunk so flushed it again. I then left it just over 2 hours before administering the Pro-C and Clegg Poo Soup! I am also going to weigh him daily to ensure he's not losing weight - tonight he was 1383g.

You'd better keep it flushed with hibiscrub mixture (any mild disinfective will do) and work the scab off until there are 1-2 days without any pus coming out and you can let it heal shut; smaller abscesses don't take very long. it very much depends on the size of an abscess and how deep it goes, but letting it drain for as long as possible, ensures that every bit of infection possible has a chance to come out or there is a risk that the abscess will blow up again.

All the best! Use your nose - you can't miss the stink as long as there is infective stuff around.

Thank you so much for all your valuable help and advice. I managed to get a little gunk out this morning and even less tonight although I'm convinced there could be more but it's not wanting to budge... Poor Claude is getting quite stressed by the poking and prodding - I imagine it's very sore. :( More Pro-C purchased today and Clegg is proving to be a very willing fresh poop provider!

Fortunately he seems well in himself and is still happy eating (I'll weigh him in a bit when I give him his probiotics). He is separated from Clegg at the moment with a mesh divider until he heals and as we speak he's trying to eat his way back in to be with his buddy! Although after this incident the divider could become a permanent fixture - at least they can still see and talk to one another...

Thanks again.

Claude has just has his Pro-C (1 pinch in 2ml of water - all taken) and poo soup (1 pellet in 2ml of water - 1.5ml administered). He weighed in at 1371g (12g less than last night) I've taken some pictures of the wound - hope they are clear enough..
