Hi

I am wondering if anyone knows where I can find information on what a healthy weight range for guinea pigs is?

I have two boars who are 9 mopnths old and I would be interested to know what a healthy weight range is so I can make sure they are growing properly

Thanks

Adult guinea pigs can weigh anything between 800g-1800g and be healthy - this huge variation is the reason why charts are pretty useless. The average adult weight seems to be between 900-1400g.

At their age, your boys should be close enough to their adult weight for the growth rate to start slowing down - I'd guess they should be around 800-1100g, depending on what kind of general body structure they have got? They will stop growing by 12-15 months old - that is also the time when the hormones finally settle down. However, guinea pigs have the ability to grow until they are about 2 years old if they happen to have some catching up to do.

wiebke has given you wonderfull info, just to clarify, what she means is this is why its VERY important to weight your piggies weekly and record their weights. Weights going down is an early indicator of illness and will give you a heads up.

Thank you this is very useful.

My guinea pigs are brothers and one is a lot smaller than the other (always has been). I shall definitely start weighing them weekly and making a note of what they weigh

:)

My two teddy sisters Nia and Nerys have very different weights - Nia is just over a kilo and Nerys is a whopping 1400g! However, it is little Nia who is the top sow of the Tribe, not Nerys!

Weighing weekly is a good habit to get into because either a sudden drastic weight loss or a slow gradual one can be easily missed; but both are one of the few clear indicators we have for health problems. Your vet will also be very grateful if he can get a better idea of what he is dealing than "we think he has lost some weight at some point".

I weighed them both today and one is 1150g and the other is 1089g

Is this ok for 9 months old boars?

Mine are 10 months and relativly similar weights. However as said before, They could be 800 grams and still be healthy, so its not really an indication.

As long as they are either gaining weight (which would be fine at there age as they could still be growing) or are staying a stable weight with a difference of no more than 30g week to week, then i doubt theres anything to worry about. Adult boars can healthily range from 800g-1400g... massive difference. :) Its all about making sure they have a healthy diet and plent of exercise.

Theres a healthy range, so dont get too het up on the numbers so long as they arent looking skinny. I have a 9mnth old ish boar and hes 1200g, i think hes going to be quite a bit boy.

x.
