Hi all

looking for some advice, the kids Guinea Pigs are now a week into life at ours and, feeding and cleaning duties have been left to me although the kids love interacting with them and one of them Oscar is already settled and quite happy to come to the cage and let us know he is there but Turbo still not sure

Anyway, I want to make sure that I am feeding them appropriately and the correct amount etc so here is the schedule
Morning 7am - only a small handful of pellets just enough to fill the bottom of the feeding bowl (just) and fill their hay to the max
Evening around 7pm - about a quarter of a pepper each, a slice of courgette, about an inch of celery each (cut into 1/4 inch) and also celery leaves (they love that)
and then something of the below about once or twice a week.
Carrot 1/2/ inch size, 1 Baby Corn, 1/4 cup Curly Kale
Also fill the hay back up again

I am going to introduce Cabbage and romaine lettuce, cucumber as I believe I can give them that daily.

when I give lettuce is it one leaf per pig or two, same with cabbage is it a leaf of it and do you break it down or not, I suggest not as I'm fairly sure no one does that for them in the wild :)

I want to pass the feeding to my Daughter (8 year old) but make it easy for her as she is terrified she is going to poison them as she reads all the foods that are harmful so doesn't like to make their food

if there is anything else I can feed daily that would be a help, I'm going to the local greengrocer today so hopefully someone can help

Thanks

We feed ours this roughly

Morning:
Cucumber -1.5 cm x 2cm chunks (twice)
Celery - 1 stick between 3 chopped up small
1/6th of Red/Green/Yellow Bell Pepper (de-seeded)

Evening:
Cucumber 1.5 cm x 2cm chunks (twice)
Two Little Gem Lettuce leaves or 10 sprigs Coriander. Twice a week we will swap in cabbage or parsley

We also add in to the above diet carrot, sweet potato, celery leaves and a few other things occasionally

But by no means am I any expert on food here, some folks on the forum are really clued up... so pick up advise where you can.

and have a read of the link given above by @piggieminder

Hello @Joma1108 and welcome.
The pic is typically what I give my 3 of an afternoon. Today they had chicory, parsley, red pepper, celery chunks and pieces of green beans. They’d had some cucumber earlier.
You have to remember that a guinea pig is a furry food processor. They have insatiable appetites and it’s soon processed out the other end.

I generally give my 5 what I have in the fridge. Tonight they will have broccoli stalk, carrot peelings, half a green pepper (pips removed), sprout leaves, a couple of spring green leaves torn up and some cucumber. Meg loves aubergine over any other veg and will eat a small square of that first. Occasionally mine get an apple core (pips removed) and a piece of banana peel. About once a month they have melon skin (guinea pig crack!) I admit that I now tend to buy veg in relation to what the guinea pigs will eat!:flag::shh:
