I was wondering if piggy's just like to have a old scratch once in while or does itching always mean there is a problem?
My two visited the vets last year as joey had some fur loss when i had him and seemed to itch alot. The vet done a skin scrape but said no mites were visible so they both had the does of xeno 450 just in case and they had the repeat 10 days later etc. Joeys fur grew back and all seemed fine, but recently they seem to be scratching again but no fur loss etc. Ive bought the mankum and neem shampoo from gorgeous guineas and have bathed them in it twice. They both seem to want to scratch when you rub the bottom of there backs i cant see any red inflamed skin or any lice why do they do this? Gizmo also has a little dandruff not excess amount just a few bits here and there joey has none. Can brushing help and is the dandruff the reason for the itching? Sorry for all the questions and long post just want to put my mind at rest.

They are just very like us - will have the odd itch to scratch, will sneeze if something irritates their nose, have grouchy days! Some scratching is normal, its excessive scratching and/or inflammed skin or sore patches you should be watching out for. You can see lice in the coat.

Like i said i cant see any sore patches or lice. What about the dandruff? They are both long haired and do i brush them every other day and check there fur daily for changes it just seems like they like a good old scratch then?

A certain amount of scratching can be due to dry indoors air now that the radiator season has started.

However, it is always worth checking for mites or fungus.

The door live indoors in my living room and we have a coal fire and we have been using more coal as the weather is getting colder.
What are the signs of fungus?

My 2 girls were scratching a bit more than normal on Friday and Eliza kept rubbing her belly on the floor. I gave them a bath with an insecticide shampoo and they have been fine since (although I am pretty sure they didn't have anything wrong with them). Your boys could just have something in their fur irritating them like a piece of hay or something? Just keep a close eye on them for a few days. Signs of a fungal infection is sore, flaky skin and possible hair loss x

They do indeed love to roll about and jump in their hay and many times Ive pulled bits of hay out of there fur so hopefully its just bits making them itch. I did bath them last week in the mankum and neem shampoo.
Thanks for the info on fungal Ive not seen any of that in there fur/skin.
