Just wondering how often to feed them veg, I have 2 boys aged 15 weeks. When I got them they were 8 weeks old and quite small, now they seem FAT! I am giving them a bowl of veg twice a day, is this too much? I am going to try and weigh them and post on here for advice.

HI

hi iam sure someone will give you for advce but when i was asked on here i was told a cup full a day of veg, i have two lil girls an give one cup a morning and one at nite, an the odd lilttle treat of a slice of cuecumber during the day xx

Well thanks both of you, I guess I am doing ok then. Will know better when I weigh them.
I am also having trouble trying to get them off muesli type dry food. When I got them at 8 weeks, they were on a muesli type food, so I bought the same but have found that they don't like yellow bits or little wheat seed bits, they are always left at bottom. I bought some nuggets from Wilkinsons and mixed in with their usual butt they were not impressed, so now I am trying this-

I thought they might go down better as it has hay in it as well as nuggets, but so far they are fishing out the old stuff.

Should I just let them have muesli and ignore the bits they won't eat or keep trying with nuggets, I don't want to upset them by changing all time.

If they are indoor piggies they will leave the yelow bits as this is flaked maize, which actually helps keep them warm, so they don't need it if indoors, most piggies leave the wheaty bits this is usually just used as a cheap way of bulking up muslie type feeds. I feed Burgess nuggets and sometimes mix a bit of muslie in as a treat

Yes, they are indoor piggies. They seem to only like green things, lol.

oh we only give fresh veg once a day, but a great selection of different things, fruit as well, and there is usually some thing left the next morning to throw away, but they always have fresh hay and good quality pellets, so i hope they are getting enough! whn we weigh them weekly they are putting on weight ( except pepper, who is 4 )

I also just give veggies once a day, at night time. I figure it gives them something to do when it's dark and I'm in bed :)) They have pellets available 24/7 and masses of hay. Mine didn't like swapping from muesli to pellets but I was firm with them. I ran low on pellets a few months ago and all the supermarket had was muesli, they turned their noses up at it. Seems they are now food snobs :))

I feed my boy twice a day.
In the morning he gets a selection of fresh veg & also normal piggy food then in the evening I give him some more veg too x

Twice a day also - morning/night. Add fruit at night so it's a bit different.

I feed my 2 girls (less than 6 months old) a small bowl of mixed veg twice a day, includes- peppers, fine green beans, broccoli, carrots with occasional treat of corn, cucumber and dandelion leaf.

They have the pellets from pets at home 24/7 plus hay, I think pudding is getting a little on the podgy side though :)) i will try to weigh her.

I give my 2 girls fresh veggies for breakfast and again when it's bed time...and maybe some little bits when they are out on the sofa and hear me opening the fridge....I can't refuse their wheeks and little expectant faces!inbreeding
I tried to swap them to pellets as they were picking out bits of the muesli food too, but when I mix them they just leave the pellets!
They absolutely love the compressed hay biscuits too!

Guinea pigs need vegetables twice a day so do not worry that you are not doing the right thing. Nuggets are best for guinea pigs as they are a complete food and do not encourage select feeding. It is difficult to get piggies on to them but so worth it. I really would not worry about their weight. Piggies are often chubby and this is fine. 500g is by no means obese. My Amina is 1100!:)

Can I ask why you say they need veggies twice a day? I thought it was the amount, not the frequency that was important.

My pigs get a bowl of wagg optimum plus every morning with spring greens and carrots and fresh water , in the evening they plenty of fresh medow hay and also a water top up if needed .
