Dannii.

Hi everyone,
I understand that i need to give my three guniea pigs a suitable diet rich in Vitamin C, due to guniea pigs not being able to produce Vitamin C on there own.
However i was just wondering if i feed my piggies a portion of fresh broccoli and a portion of fresh carrots a day is this enough?
I was always wondering should i vary the fresh veg i give them?
Is giving them broccoli bad for them if i give it them everyday?

Sorry if this question has already come up.

Thanks in advance.

People say you shouldn't give carrotts everyday. Don't know about brocolli but george doesn't like it he seems to put it in his bed & carry it around but not eat it. Not sure he knows it is food :)) Will have to give some to tiger & see what he thinks as they like the completly different veg just to be akward!

Broccoli can lead to gas in some pigs, so it's best fed just once or twice a week in small amounts. Carrots are high in calcium and Vitamin A so aren't ideal to feed in large amounts each day - again best to stick to a small chunk a day at the most. The best and most common everyday veg are:

Lettuces (all types but iceberg)
Peppers
Coriander
Chard
Cucumber
Corn husks/silks
Cherry tomatoes

A variety of at least three veg a day is the amount to aim for, totalling a minimum of a handful of fresh veg per pig each day. Try to encourage your pigs to eat peppers or coriander each day - nutritious foods - rather than just cucumber and lettuce, since these have much less nutritional value (but are good for variety/ensuring water intake).

What about fennel, savoy, red cabbage and cauliflower leaves? Can they be fed every day? I can get free cauliflower leaves, savoy leaves and very cheap red cabbage from my local fruit shop.

thanks

I think that the savoy, red cabbage and cauliflower leaves are just as gassy as the broccolli so shouldn't be fed everyday! not sure about the fennel!

Thankyou for all your helpful information :)
Has helped me tonnes. x

i feed tiger peppers everyday but george won't touch them he only likes celery trimmed beans lettuce spinach and carrots. Can I just give him a couple of diff ones each day?
