At the moment I replace my nuggets twice a day. Is this right or is once a day ok? Seem to be going through a lot, and the girls never finish them, so wasting alot.

Are you giving an unlimited quantity or only the recommended 10-15g per pig per day?
If you're giving unlimited, then rather start giving out portions. Much less waste.
I give 1tbsp per pig in the morning, and another at night. It works out to 10-15g twice a day (I have 2 pigs).

Yes, just giving the recommended amount, maybe slightly more, but they hardly eat them. They far prefer their hay and veggies!

If they are adult pigs they don't need so many as stated on the pack. I'd start giiving them less rather than wasting them. I give approx. 10gm between mine in the morning and again in the evening, they empty the bowl in a couple of mins. and I remove it from the cage.

I have a Ferplast cage, and their nuggets are up on the feeding platform which I'm wondering if that's part of the problem. Putting them in a bowl down on the lower level to see if that has any effect on how much they eat.

Mine have a handful per day between the two of them. Have tried Burgess excel and brainless. They are not keen on either. Even tried some crispy muesli. Nope. Will keep looking for something that they will eat!

I am a bit useless and don't really follow the recommended amounts.
I feed nuggets twice a day in small enough quantities that 90% get eaten.
If they aren't eating them and you are throwing a lot away then I would probably cut back a bit.

Weigh your piggies regular to check they aren't loosing weight, and if they seem to be doing fine with less then it is ok to feed less.

I used to feed the amount given on the bag of nuggets and found they were never finished so we were throwing a lot away. After reading on here about recommended portions I reduced the amount to 20g twice a day (which may still be a bit too much so when they girls get to 1 I might reduce it further) We use a little pot so we know we are giving a consistent amount. The girls now finish them so no wastage.

I give 1/8 of a cup of oxbow cavy cuisine as stated on the back of the bag in the morning and again at night as my two piggies like to share a bowl. Each portion roughly weighs 10gms. They have no problems finishing a bowl and there is never any waste.

I give mine 30 grams between them in the morning and they eat everything.
I don't give any at night becaus ethats when they get their vegetables.
They eat a lot of hay so I don't think they need any more nuggets. :)

I only put nuggets out once a day in the recommended amounts based on which cage and how many pigs. The nuggets are usually all gone (or almost gone) by the next morning but that's fine with me as there is always plenty of hay for them to munch on plus the 2 portions of veggies a day so they are not going to starve.

Mine get nuggets once a day. I currently feed slightly less than the packet recommendations re. what people were saying above to minimise waste. They have plenty of other things (mostly hay) to eat when they run out.

Mine get nuggets once a day veg and twice as mine love they veg normally cabbage or kale and 3 times a week some carrot of fruit in with it as a treat they have 3 different types of hay witch is swapped daily for them plus little treat for when kids have some lap time they love corriandea and parsley too

My 3 sows lived 8 years on mostly hay and vegetables/fruits. I always put in a 3 tablespoons of pellets, but they rarely ate it. They were healthy according to our vet.

I just leave the pellets until they are all eaten. Why is everyone throwing them away? Am I missing something? My girls are 11 months and are still getting unlimited pellets. They seem to eat loads! I'm not looking forward to restricting them, they sit looking at the empty bowl then looking at me accusingly now lol

Yeah, those comments confused me, I have to say. If I ever go down to feed them more and there's still some left (there's a bit of variance now I'm introducing grass), I just top up with less than usual.

We wash the food bowl every morning before their breakfast so I would throw away anything then. In the afternoon, especially when they were younger they'd pee and poo in there so again we'd get rid of any leftovers. Not a problem now as we seem to have got the amounts better proportioned and they finish everything. Although even now I still find the odd poo in their bowl!

Although thinking about it they happily munch away in the hay tray where they pee and poo :vom: our girls are so classy

I scatter feed my two and leave their two handfulls of pellets in small piles around their cage. I chuck out any leftovers when I clean out the cage (shake out the liner and clean the litter trays).
