I've had my little sweet Sergio for 3 weeks now but the petshop owner didn't really know about Sergio's age and I haven't taken him to the vet yet since he looks healthy (I know, shame on me..). I know that most of you are really experienced in guinea pigs,so can you please at least guess how old he may be? :)

could you weigh him?

my 4w (ish) old weighs approx 280g
my 12w (ish) old weighs approx 600g
my adults (1yish) are about 1100g and 1200g

That might gage an approx age

To weigh mine I just pop them in the kitchen scales (in the attached jug)

Yep, weight will tell more than anything. It's also a good idea to get into the habit of weighing weekly, so you can track his weight. One of the first signs of illness or other problems is usually weight loss, so weighing each week, especially as he grows throughout his first year, will give you an idea of what is normal for him.

It's impossible to tell a piggies age from a picture.
As well as weighing you can also tell an approx age of a piggie from its claws.
Do your piggies claws look as though they have been cut or are they very pointy?

I just weighed him and he's only 432 grams (and he eats ..a lot!) :) His claws look uncut too, so I guess that he must be really young, is that right?

my baby Finlay was born 15 Oct and he's just that weight! he devours his food, he has as much as his friend who's 1.2 kg!

Thank you soooo much for your help! Does this mean that he has to eat some kind of special food or not? I give him loads of hay since he really likes it and a mix of different kind of seeds which I was told that he should eat..:) He really loves them too!
Thank you very much again!

I think there is a STICKY on this forum on the food section on what to give the piggies. You should have started yours on fresh greens by now, he needs the vit c and moisture from them. Otherwise, anything they like - which is not dansgerous - is good.:)

Pigs of that weight are usually 6-9 weeks old. My 3 week olds weighed just under 300g and put on 50g on average per week, so Sergio is very young still.

A dry feed mix isn't really great for piggies. The seeds can be fattening, and mixes allow selective feeding to occur. A plain pellet - Burgess Supa Guinea Excel or Science Selective Guinea Pig, for example - is generally considered superior. The Science Selective especially would be good for Sergio; piggies under 6-8 months old can be free fed alfalfa hay and alfalfa based dry feed. Science Selective is alfalfa based.
