Just following on from the questions thread I was curious as to the oldest guinea pig you have every owned or own now.

Mine are all young apart from Gypsy and I am only guessing she's not that young but actually have no idea how old she is.

So what about everyone else?

How old is / was your oldest?

And what do you think holds the key to a long life for a guinea pig?

my two first guinea pigs both slef black boar brothers who we got when they were 7 lived till past their 9th birthday but by how much not sure...

Not sure why they lived to such a great age as the accomodation they came in when we first got them was tiny

My oldest now are 4.5yrs, my 5yr old girl passed earlier this year but my first ever piggies lived to around 8.5yrs & 7yrs.
This was in a time when piggies were solely kept outside in a hutch (not in a shed). My pigs were bedded on shavings & had straw added in winter. They did have carpet at their hutch fronts & tarpaulin to cover the whole hutch to keep them dry/warmer in winter.
They had hay, their dry food was the muesli the pet-shop bagged themselves & the only veggies they got were carrots, spring greens, grass & dandelion leaves & they didn't get them every day.
I never bathed them nor did i clean the boars grease gland & i've no doubt that my piggy husbandry then, by todays standards, would be deemed unacceptable :)

Wow that says something right there don't you think?

My oldest pigs have lived to be about 7+ :

My fav - beautiful girl x)x), Milla survived surgery to remove ovarian cysts. I cried in the vets when I went to collect her. I really thought that I'd never see her again.

- who won the cat box carrier in a back garden brawl with a local moggy :(|) but never got on with Milla so they spent their time communicating through bars.

King of pigs. Free range :) Went out to buy a paper, saw what was a wee runt in the petshop window and couldn't pass by. x)

I should say now that I would not normally get my pigs from a pet shop - esp now I've seen how many need rehomed!

I certainly do. He (8.5yr old) passed because he ate something he shouldn't whilst free-ranging in the garden) who knows how long he may have lived had he not done so.
That pig was badly chomped by my nethie bun (again when it was acceptable to keep the 2 together) from his rump to his neck. He fathered a litter (mis-sexed sow), was neutered & had an ulcerated eye which was treated successfully. He was a star :)

My eyes just welled up 8...

My oldest is just 11 months (Maybe older but I count his Birthday from the day that I got him. He wasn't that old when I got him, either, he was very, very tiny.)
Ralph.

My oldest was approx. 8 years old named Maggie. She was completely blind and so loving. She loved her head being scratched. She would beg at the sides of her cage standing up on her back legs to be petted and then she would slowly fall sideways when you petted her cause she loved it so much. I miss her alot. She had the nicest personality.

Most of my pigs have lived til approx 6 years old.

Lynn
