I had 2 guinea pigs bought at the same time. One sadly passed away in December at 5.5 but my other is still alive and seemingly happy. I took him to the vet after his brother passed away and the vet said he was very healthy but that it wasn't unusual to lose the one left behind within a few months. It's been 7 months and I worry every time I can't hear him.

How olds your guinea pig and can they live to 7?

My boy is around three and my girls most likely nearly three (I don't know their actual ages). Guinea pigs can live to seven, but the normal is 5/6 to 6/7 from what I remember. Did you notice anything strange with your boy before he passed away? Piggies are prey animals so they don't show many symptoms at times, though. It could just be that it was his time. Rest in peace to your piggy :)

@Wiebke ?

Nope didn't notice anything, he ate as normal the night before. I think it was just his age.

I think 5.5 is a good age, guineas life spans vary greatly. I had two girls who went to 2.5 and 3.5, a boy who missed 9 by a few weeks and another boy who made it past 7. It depends on the piggy, breeding and environment we all do the very best we can for them, some things we can control others we can't. I believe a happy life is as important as a long one.

I have 10 guinea lol

These are rough ages as all but one were from a rescue

The Boars are:

Big E is - 2 /12, Jericho - 2, Storm - 15 month, Snow - 13 months, TK - 9 months, Tyrion - 6 weeks, Cesaro - 1 year.

The Sows:

Nattie - 3, Khaleesi 3, Cocoa 3.

I have 12 pigs ranging from 6 weeks up to 2 years old, I sadly lost my oldest pig at 6 years old earlier in the year.

I have two piggies at the moment. Kiwi is roughly 2.5 years and Willow is almost 3.5 years old.

I lost my old boy last weekend & he had just turned 7. We lost his brother when he was about 5. I'm now left with a 2 year old boar & the 2 new girls who are 11 weeks ish x

oh bless you, the oldest pig I lost was 6 but then she had renal disease, cysts and the start of an abscess by the time she was helped over the bridge. I think it wasn't long ago on here that someone said they had recently lost their 10 year old piggy!

I recently lost my eldest at 6 years and a few months. Five and six are quite common for guinea pigs to die of old age, and also at this age they can find it harder to cope with general illnesses. However I think the world's oldest piggy was 14 years and ten months!
Many things can be a factor, just as with any other animal - genetics, stress, living conditions, diet, illness, birth defects... I do think genetics plays a huge part.

lots have lived to age seven, and even longer. so he may have time yet. usually if one passes away soon after their friend, it's down to depression or because there was something contagious. most brighten up again when they get a new friend. companionship is so important and they get their sparkle back again :)

with mine - chesney passed aged six, maisie aged six aswell, and poor eddie was only 2yrs 7months.

My oldest piggie was 9 when he passed and he was very healthy and only died because he ate a poisonous plant.

My current oldest piggie is Romano, the black piggie in my avatar. He's roughly 4-5 years old. I got him in July 2011 and he was 11-13 weeks old.

2 years old. My postman said he had a guinea pig that lived to be 14 years old!

:DOf my present piggies, Bonnie is my oldest at just past 5 years. Sophie was approx 6 years when she suddenly died in January 2010. Suzie was helped over the bridge at 6 years, 4 months. Tamsy was the same age when she went, too. The latter two were the longest lived piggies I've ever had. Those still here: Swan was 1 year on 30th June. Crow Feather is about 1 and a half years, Beano and Dandy are just over 2 years, Inka and Maya are a little over 3 years. Aspen and Cedar, judging by their size and length of claws, are about 2-3 months old.

Oreo and Buzz are around 4 months old which is really young compared to some of the piggies on here! I forget how young they are though sometimes!

Mine are a range of ages from 8 months (Toffee and Thumbelina) to Star who is 6. The majority are around 4. There's 16 of them in total.

Thank you all! He is such a happy gujnea. We moved him inside after his brother passed away and he's outsude our living room and he loves it, loves being round us and he is so noisy when we come home wanting attention! I hope he has another year, he is such a special one x
