I adopted my piggies from P@H two weeks ago and the staff member couldn't tell me how old they were (new staff) so I was wondering if there was a way of working out approximately how old they are? Ben weighs 860 gm and Jerry 766 gm. They are both about 8" or so long. I don't think they will be very old but it would be nice to have some idea. Can anyone help?

Going from my personal records I would say they are between 4-6 months most of my piggies have been around that age when they have hit that weight, obviously some piggies vary if been fed a poor diet etc so might be smaller but I would estimate they will be under 6 months or thereabouts, there is no way of knowing for sure but you can estimate :)

It's really tough to tell the age of piggies but their weight helps when younger, along with how thick their toenails are. Older piggies tend to have thicker nails whereas young piggies have little needle like nails.

Thanks both of you, their nails are still quite sharp and small in width which makes me think they are pretty young. They have grown a inch or so in the two weeks I've had them but I am worried I may be overfeeding on the veggie front. I spoil them with two large spring green leaves, two 1" chunks of cucumber and about 2" of carrot cut in half lengthways per day. I also give them dandelions when I can get them. (can't walk without crutches after op just now) Obviously as much hay as they want and a couple of treat sticks are available as and when they choose.

I had my New Guinea pig weighted and he's around 300g at around 7 weeks old yours are quite a bit bigger than mine x

Not sure you can overfeed them with veggies although variation is key to prevent upset tummies etc.... Mine got a different green every day and a large bowl of veggies each night plus breakfast in a morning. Personally I wouldn't bother with treat sticks as often hidden nasties in them such as honey but unlimited hay and a bowl of dried food and you can't go far wrong. I think they are under 6 months especially as the nails are thin still :)
